rain cloud and sunMost elephants living in Africa, live in Amboseli National Park located in Kenya. It has 2 wet seasons and 2 dry seasons. The wet seasons is where it rains all the time. During the dry seasons, it could become like a desert. The long wet season goes from Mid-March to Mid-June. The short wet season is from late October to early December. The long dry season is from Mid-June to Mid-October. While the short dry season is from December to Mid-March. Where the cycle starts all over again.

Elephants tend to visit the same places for water and vegitation time and time again. They eat the bark and leaves from trees. Elephants are often known to knock a small tree over to get to the fresh leaves at the top of the tree.

Elephants live in groups known as herds. The leader of the herd is often a grandmother type figure called the matriarch. She leads the rest of the herd to fresh water and food.

Male elephants are often kicked out of the group when they become a teenager. Mature male elephants, called bulls, are often seen roaming by themselves.

The trunk of an elephant is used for greeting other elephants that they might meet. They are also used like a hand, for picking up various objects. The trunk has over 40,000 muscles.

elephant ears wigglingAn elephants ears tend to be paper thin. They have many veins running through them. When an elephant flaps his ears, the blood circulates around and helps to cool the elephant.

The tusks of an elephant can grow to be very large. They will sharpen their tusks on the bark of a tree as they tear it to eat. Unfortunately, most tusks never grow to their full potential. This is due to the early deaths of the elephant through poaching.

Man is the elephants #1 enemy. They tend to kill the elephants so that they can take their ivory tusks and sell them to make money. What man does not realize is that if they let the elephant die of natural causes and then take the ivory there would be alot more for them to sell.

Contrary to popular belief, elephants are not afraid of mice. They can become startled by quick movements, but not because it is a mouse. They also do not eat peanuts.mouse
