The consciousness of being at war, and therefore in danger, makes the handing-over of power to a small caste seem the natural, unavoidable condition of survival.
- George Orwell, 1984
He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, senseless brutality, deplorable love-of-country stance, how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action! It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder.
- Albert Einstein
They [Conservatives] just don't get it. We [Liberals] love America
just as much as they do. But in a different way. You see, they love
America the way a four-year loves her mommy. Liberals love America like
grown-ups. To a four-year-old, everything Mommy does is wonderful and
anyone who criticizes Mommy is bad. Grown-up love means actually
understanding what you love, taking the good with the bad, and helping your
loved one grow. Loves takes attention and work and is the best thing in the
world.
- Al Franken
Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind. And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and gladly so. How do I know? For this is what I have done. And I am Caesar.
- Julius Caesar
