September 18, 2001

As a nation we have gone through the worst week imaginable.  Over 5,000 people lost their lives because of the fanatical actions of a few people.  Billions of dollars went down in flames and rubble.  Millions of Americans are affected because of the actions of these misguided individuals.  How sad that the thinking has become so twisted that there are many thousands of men and women from some of the Mid-Eastern countries who were dancing in the streets celebrating the destruction of lives in America.  Some were handing out candy to children as they danced and sang in honor of those who destroyed so much in such a short time.

For many Mid-Eastern people, America has become the focal point of hatred.  It isn't so much what we have done, it's what we stand for - equality and freedom for all.  The very things these people do not have nor would they ever be allowed to have.  It is a perverse type of thinking that wants to destroy those very things that one does not have and envies because another country does provided those things to their citizens.  It is equally sad when this political anger is tied to a "holy" war- a Jihad.  How, in any one’s thinking, could God bless the total destruction of innocent lives? We have heard many Islamic leaders speaking out that this is not what Allah teaches.  They have condemned the terrorists and call for their accountability.

What is our hope?  It is the same as it has always been.  Our hope is in the God we serve.  The Psalmist tells us in chapter nine, verse 10: "And those who know Thy name will put their trust in Thee; For thou, O Lord, hast not forsaken those who seek Thee."  That is a promise that I hold dear.  I know that we may have some rough roads in life, but I also know that my God will see me through.  That is an assurance that we all have been given.  I do not doubt that promise and I will live with that promise in my heart and in my living.  Let's not allow the fanatics and terrorists of this world to alter our faith in the one true living God.  The God who promises us that He is in control and He will not forsake us.  Let us also keep our leaders in prayer as they look at alternatives to dealing with those people whose purpose is to bring terror into the lives of all of us.

My experience is that worship is a wonderful way of letting go and letting God be in control.  I hope you will share with me this Sunday as we find new ways to understand our Lord.

WEEK OF COMPASSION: Around the World – Around the Year

Week of Compassion is currently responding to an appeal for funding from Church World Service.  CWS has already mobilized its large network of volunteer

disaster consultants, is working with local interfaiths and helping establish new interfaiths that will respond to pastoral care and long-term recovery needs.

There are Disciple families in New York and Canton, Ohio that have been impacted directly by the WTC attack in NY.  Johnny Wray, the National director of WOC, has issued a plea for monetary support to the WOC Response Fund. “The needs from this catastrophe will continue for years and years to come – which is why, in part that our monetary gifts are so important now.”

If you wish to assist in this effort, please make your check payable to DTCC and designate it for WOC.  We will be collecting these gifts over the next two weeks and will send one check from DTCC.

If you want additional information, you can check the WOC web site at www.weekofcompassion.org or the Disciples site at www.disciples.org.
