May 14, 2001

Last Sunday was a great Mother's Day service. We gave our mothers flowers and book marks and said a lot of good things about them. It's too bad that we have to have a day each year where we recognize our mothers because they should be recognized every day. One of the things that we didn't do last Sunday that I remember doing as a child is recognizing different categories of mothers. Such as the oldest and the youngest and the one with the most children and the one who came the furthest to church. It was just one more way that we were able to tell them how much we appreciate what they have done for us.

As I sat in worship last Sunday I thought about some of those categories and in my mind I recognized those mothers. Inez Helsley and Mary Mitchell were our two oldest mothers that were present. We had a couple of young mothers too, Laura Huff and Amanda Stowe (B.J. and Gerry Wilson's granddaughter) both had their young babies with them. I'm not sure who had the largest family, but I know that several in our congregation came from large families. There were so many of our mothers present and each one of them brought something special with them. We just need to tell them thanks for being our mothers and for teaching us values that we have lived with all our lives.

Now for this Sunday! Don't forget that this is our annual church picnic and we want you to join us. There will be a dessert bake off and if you have a special recipe why not share it with the rest of us. There will be a contest which should make this exciting.

See you all this Sunday as we celebrate the risen Lord.

MEET OUR NEW MEMBERS

On Sunday, March 25, we welcomed Aretha Woodley into the membership of the church. Aretha is engaged to Rick Tielens. They plan to be married in September. She enjoys all sports, including basketball, football and wrestling, and enjoys helping people. Aretha and Rick also like camping in their 26 foot travel trailer. A former member of Promiseland Baptist Church, Aretha sang in her church choir. She hopes to return to school to become a nursing assistant. Please welcome Aretha and add her name to the church directory.

Two sisters who have been visiting nearly a year, placed their membership with DTCC on April 1. To their friends from Humes High School who attend the Edna Burk Class, they are known as "Buckwheat" and "Cat-Cat." The rest of us just know them as Jeanette Lawshe and Catherine Hudspeth.

Jeanette and Catherine began visiting at the urging of their friend Pauline Parks Kinney. They attended the Edna Burk class and enjoyed Bill Parks’ teaching and the fellowship with lots of former North Memphis classmates "We went in one Sunday to visit and never left," said Jeanette. Jeanette has a grown son and a 12 year-old grandson. She especially enjoys helping son Bruce, who is known by neighborhood children as "the King of Halloween," decorate his home in Summerdale Estates for the holiday. She also likes helping her grandson with special school projects. Jeanette has worked for 42 years as a Broker and in Customer Service for American General Insurance Financial Services, and is a former member of First United Methodist Church.

Catherine Hudspeth also transferred her membership from First United Methodist Church. She is married to Homer and although she has no children, she enjoys all her nieces and nephews. (And since there were ten children in the family, there’s lots of those!) Catherine has worked in purchasing for Malco Theaters, Inc. for 40 years. She enjoys going to craft shows and collects Norman Rockwell figurines. Catherine says she likes people and loves "50’s style dancing."
