Multi-Categorical Program

It is the intent of the Dubuque Community School District to provide all students with disabilities a free, appropriate education in the least restrictive environment.  Students are required to earn the same number of credit hours as non-disabled peers.  The multicategorical course of study includes alternative, equivalent courses to meet district graduation requirements.  Any deviation from the course of study must be presented to the IEP Team and stipulated in the IEP.  Dubuque Community School District will periodically review the multicategorical course of study to ensure that the unique needs of each student are being met.

Behavior Disability Program

The goal of this program is to provide opportunities for individuals to learn and utilize to the fullest degree the necessary skills to live as independently as possible within settings that allow for functional, age appropriate instruction in the least restrictive environment.  During the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) the team should focus on the student's interests, abilities, and vision for his/her future to write functional goals that will assist the student in making the transition from high school to their adult life.  The following curricular areas are available to assist students in being as independent as possible.

Students placed in the Personal Learning Program are included into general education classes when deemed appropriate by the IEP team. A Peer Helper Program has been established at the high school level for non-disabled students to come into the severe-profound classroom to assist students with various class work.  Interactions between non-disabled students facilitates the development of skills, attitudes and values that will prepare both the disabled and non-disabled students to be sharing, caring and contributing members of the community.  Environments which are least restrictive for some disabled students may be more restrictive for others; thus decisions regarding the least restrictive environment (LRE) for each student is made individually and based upon the needs of the student.  These areas should be addressed at the students' Individual Education Program (IEP).

Super Senior Program
Students that are 18 and have completed 40 or more credits may join the Super Senior Program.  The student's goals are developed by the IEP team and instructed completely in the community.  The goal of the Super Senior Program  is to assist students in making a successful transition from high school to their adult life.  Goal areas may include securing adult services, career exploration, applying for and maintaining employment, mobility training, and independent living skills.  To discuss or apply for this program, contact your son/daughters Case Manager or contact Lori Anderson at the Forum, 588-5147.
