Fallen From Grace

By Jessica Day

Buffy sat in history class drumming her fingers nails on the desk. It was the only thing she could do to keep from falling asleep. Besides the fact that history class totally bored her, she was extra sleepy from last nights vamp rounds. She barely got home in time to get into bed for an hour's sleep, she got home soon after the sky turned a cobalt blue, about an hour before sunrise. All the vampires would be heading home at that time, the sky was clear and no vamp wanted to take the chance of getting hit by even one ray of the bright sunrise light. Besides, mom would be getting up real soon and the last thing she needed was for her mom to check on an empty bed!

She stopped tapping them long enough to take a look at them. Damn, she thought, I should have taken time to paint my nails! They're growing out and they don't exactly go with this tank top... that was the least of her worries though. Last night she must have slayed about 20 vamps and spotted way too many things that seemed unusual to her, and on the Hellmouth, not much shocked the slayer and the slayerettes anymore. To top it all off, tonight was some dance for some occasion (she had fallen asleep during the morning announcements). She, Willow and Xander were going shopping for something to wear, after school. She had been eyeing a sleeveless, ankle length, blue silk dress with white clouds on it and decided to go for it.

She had butterflies in her stomach though. Normally she never had a problem with boys and dates, but tonight was different. He wasn't just any boy. He was her secret. Not even Willow knew how she felt. Not even a week ago, Cordelia dumped him. Buffy had come to grips with the fact that she did love Xander. She had told herself No!, that she didn't feel this way but she couldn't hold it in any longer. She told herself it would ruin the relationship they had; it would ruin Willow; it would ruin her relationship with Willow; She had Angel, he had Cordelia...as many excuses as she could find. But now they were gone. He wanted to be with her too and it couldn't hurt their friendship, only make it stronger and their friendship had made their love stronger and would continue to do so. Willow had Oz, and Xander dating no longer bothered her. She no longer had Angel and he no longer had Cordelia. All of her reasons were gone and she was glad. Tonight she was going to ask him out. He would be her boyfriend now. Not right away, of course. He was so bummed since Cordelia "kicked him to the curb..." as he had put it. She would start with the dance. She knew how she would do it too. In the store, she would grab his shirt with a smile and pull him into another aisle. As he stumbled behind her she would stop, wrap her arms around his neck and put one hand on the nape of his neck, one on the back of his head, running her fingers into his dark hair. She would kiss him as passionately and meaningfully as he had her, in her dreams. Then she would whisper in his ear, asking him to the dance. She could feel the whole thing as if it were happening right then. She could feel the stunned look on his face melt as he kissed her too. She felt his arms slowly wrap around her waist, embracing her, making everything perfect.

In her planning she missed the bell and Willow and Xander were standing over her desk.

"Dreaming about me again?" Xander jokingly asked her, he was so down he couldn't even laugh at his own joke though.

Buffy laughed nervously.

"C'mon Buffy," willow said, "school's over. Time to go shoppinggggggggg!!!" She was jumping up and down and spinning. The few stragglers collecting their books were staring at her. "Oops! heh heh."

"What's with her?" Buffy quietly asked Xander. "Xander...did you let her drink your 'Surge' again? You know she can't take all that caffeine..."

"Sorry, she was thirsty."

Buffy turned back to the blushing Willow. "Ok Will, let me just go to my locker and we are out of here, Xander, you have your car right?...Xander?"

"Hmm? Oh, yeah."

"Well let's go."
