I moved into the dorm at Cleveland State the fall after we graduated. One of my four roommates that first quarter turned out to be the nephew of Mr. Bishop; we ended up rooming together for my entire stay. Initially, I majored in Industrial Engineering, but switched to Computer Science when the program was opened in 1971. I soon got a job in the school's Computer Center as an Operator and then as a Systems Programmer.
In the summer of 1973, I let myself become infatuated with a gal who also lived in the dorm. She was tired of Cleveland, and wanted to move to San Francisco. Under the guise of a ten-week vacation from school, I decided to travel west with her: on Tuesday I had my first lesson in driving a motorcycle, on Wednesday I bought a motorcycle, on Friday, I got my license, on Saturday, we left.
For five and a half weeks we camped our way across the country. By the time we got to Taos, New Mexico we ran out of money. Patty took a job in a ski lodge, and I high-tailed in down to Tucson, where one of my aunts and my oldest sister lived. I worked and lived there for nearly five years before my job took me to Denver.
I stayed in Denver for just under two years before moving to Chicago to work with my former manager from the CSU Computer Center. After a few years, I married a co-worker; we decided it wasn't a good thing, and parted after two and a half years. Shortly after splitting, I met a wonderful woman, Jeanne. We quickly became best friends and sweethearts; and married just a few months after we met. Shortly afterwards, we left Chicago for Vermont.
We never adjusted to Vermont, and spent most of our weekends OUT of the state. In just under three years, we decided to make the move to California, where we both wanted to live, anyway. I managed to find a job that would help pay for our move, and westward I traveled once again.
The Central Coast of California is absolutely, positively gorgeous! It's like perpetual spring and fall, with one week of summer and one week of winter. The coastline is magnificent. Yes: superlative, superlative… for anyone who's been to Monterey or Carmel -- well, you know what I'm talking about.
Despite going through the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake (the epicenter was only twenty miles from our home), we decided to buy a house in the area and fill it with our home. Sadly, Jeanne was diagnosed with breast cancer just before our tenth wedding anniversary. Despite a tremendous effort lasting nearly four years, Universal Wisdom decreed she was needed elsewhere: she departed for her Great Rest almost two years ago.
I miss my Best Friend.
Shortly afterwards, I met Debbie, a native of the San Francisco Bay area. We've become very good friends AND sweethearts. Last September, I sold my house and moved my home up to the peninsula. I have no children, unless you want to count my two little kitty-cats: Topaz and SweetPea.
For nearly thirty years, I've been working with computers, and am going to switch careers. This fall, I'll start back to school part time: I will open my Family Counseling practice no later than January of 2006.
What can I say after thirty years? Does anything really need to be said? In reviewing the bio web page, I see that we've all, in our own way, found a path. Some of us share it with another, some of us are still traveling alone. A few have had their journeys end rather quickly and suddenly.
Though our paths are different, and so often quite separate, we're all searching for the same thing.

I graduated in June 1970. I started working as a clerk-typist at Industrial Publishing Co. which is aka: Penton-Publishing. Three years later, I had an associate degree from Tri-C and I was a group leader at IPC. I then left the company to take a job at Bailey Controls as clerk-secretary. You say "Why?" Well, I will tell you; that as long as I got a C or better in all my classes then the company would pay.
In 1974, I dedicated my life to Jesus Christ as found in the Bible, Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23, Romans 5:7 and Romans 10:9-13. I have not looked back since.
In 1975, I married a wonderful man, Arthur; we will be celebrating our 25th Anniversary, September 27th. Although we have no children, God has used us in a mighty way by being "spiritual parents" to so many children over these many years.
I held many positions at Bailey, but was laid-off in 1982 and my husband was laid-off from National Acme. God was good in that we were able to survive through our unemployment, distributions, contributions from friends and many prayers.
I completed my B.B.A. - Accounting from CSU in 1983. Yeah!!! I had gone to school part-time at night all those many years. Although I had a degree, I still had trouble obtaining decent full-time employment. I was registered at numerous temporary employment agencies. Then finally, I got a postion with the Dept. of Treasury in 1986, where I have been ever since. I live for my vacation time that accumulates. I have really been blessed with some good positions and I have enjoyed working with numerous personnel within the agency.
I am so looking forward to the 30th reunion because I have such fond memories of the Maple Heights School System, my cheerleading days, all the wonderful teachers, classmates, my family and friends. They all touched my life and with the Lord's help contributed to the way that I am today.

My life path since graduation has ranged far from the busy classrooms and scattered study halls of Maple Heights High School into a life of flying and travel—and it started almost immediately.
Within eighteen months of graduation, I was a young, nineteen- year-old U.S. Army helicopter gunship pilot avoiding tracer fire and other hazards while skirting the treetops in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. This baptism of combat flying proved to be my introduction and entry into an ongoing aviation career that continues today.
By mid-1974 I was free of the Army, back in Ohio, and attending Kent State University while flying helicopters part-time with the Ohio National Guard. In 1977 I left Kent, Ohio for USAF pilot training armed with a degree in Business Administration. From 1979 until 1986 I flew jet fighters and attack aircraft, lived in England, toured Europe, and ended my USAF active duty participation enjoying life along the Atlantic beaches of Florida. In August of 1986 I left the beaches and began my current career as a full-time airline pilot for Northwest Airlines, and part-time fighter pilot for the Wisconsin Air National Guard.
It wasn’t all work. During this time I became the proud father of two lovely daughters, Megan and Mairin. Megan was born in dusty, dry Tucson in 1979, and Mairin garnished dual citizenship by birth in an English hospital in 1982.
After a difficult divorce in 1990—and despite my commitment to never remarry--I discovered a lovely Texas lady on a warm beach in the Marianas Islands. She also worked for Northwest Airlines, and following an adventurous relationship of travel together we happily married in 1995 on another Island, Hawaii. It only seemed fitting.
Since graduation my travels have taken me afar to the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal, Pyramids of Giza, Russia, across the frozen wastes of Greenland and through the warm tropical air of Singapore. I’ve been blessed to see great changes in the past thirty years, meet wonderful people and appreciate the opportunities of life.
Marianne and I currently live in Madison, WI, a lovely, lake-filled city hidden in the upper Midwest. When not at work in airplanes we keep busy with our common interest in winter skiing, summer winetasting and general exploring. At home, we tend to the apple orchard and do the traditional grounds keeping, enjoying quiet time now that both daughters are off to school.
One bit of note: By the time we celebrate the next MHHS Class of ’70 reunion, I’ll be retired from military flying after almost 30 years of handling various tactical aircraft overhead different locations. Personally, it’s going to be difficult to find anything else in the years ahead as interesting, personally demanding or enriching. The military took a skinny, unguided kid, challenged him with complicated training and the chance to exceed his wildest expectations! Flying in all environments from a hover in helicopters to supersonic airspeeds in the F-16 was a dazzling pleasure I’ll never forget. I take great pride in having met wonderful leaders, superb peers, and the privilege of serving my country in uniform for some 30 years.
But in retrospect, all the adventures commenced with graduation in the tumultuous year of 1970. It was this experience which prepared myself--and all of the Class of 1970--for what lay beyond. Now, while flying high above Cleveland on a clear day, I’ll look down and seek out that small section of suburbia called Maple Heights. After I locate the disjointed high school building hidden amongst the streets, trees and houses, memories of those three years of change from sophomore to senior will return, and I’ll smile to myself. You know, it really was a good place to start, wasn’t it?

I served as Senior Pastor of Mayflower Baptist Church from 1977-1990 (South Bend, IN). I moved to California in 1977 when my husband's company transferred him. My daughter was almost 1 year old at the time and my son was born 1-1/2 years later, so I was a stay-at-home mom for awhile. Shortly after this, my immediate family (mom, dad, brother) also relocated to California. We divorced in 1980 and that's when I went to Ventura College and earned an Associates Degree in Accounting. I began working for the Dept. of Defense in 1982 and have been here for 26 years. Hoping to retire in 4 more years and will probably relocate to be closer to my kids, and maybe grandkids by then.

Marty was my brother. Marty passed away Saturday, January 23, 1993. He was 41 years old. He died from pneumonia and sickle cell anemia disease. Our brother, Larry Mcafee, passed away three years later on Saturday, July 13, 1996, from complications of sickle cell anemia, as well. We, as a family, miss the two of them so very much. I have one brother living, Ezell McAfee. My parents are still living and residing in Maple Heights.

Here is a short history of my life.
I graduated from MHHS in 1970 at the very young age of 17.
College: Cuyahoga Community College Associates of Applied Science Criminal Justice.
State of Ohio Certified Instructor: Instructed at Case Western Reserve University School of Law (Criminal Justice Section) and Cuyahoga Community College Eastern Campus.
Over 3,500 hours of training, total, in just under 26 years. But still no Bachelors Degree! Go Figure!
I'm looking forward to retirement in December of this year and starting a new career... wow, a pension and a new salary at 48 years old , what a concept!!
It finally took a Maple Hts. Grad to make my married life stable, the former Lisa Ruscsak of Rowena Ave.
My dream in school was to be a pilot, a fighter pilot no less, so Hesselbein, if you read this, " GO SIT ON A TACK". That's "A" TACK, not "ATTACK"!!! Remember when I saw you at the airshow?!!
As for the rest of my life history, everybody will just have to wait until I finish my book, "TEARS OF A FATHER".

I married Kevin Kamenicky (class of 69) in 1973. We were divorced in 1984. I and my 3 sons, Randy (25), Ryan (22), and Rory (20), moved to Deltona, Florida in 1988.
Randy, a most industrious young man, has been working 2 jobs to put himself through Florida State University. He is a computer genius and has his own business (job #3) building computers for anyone who wants one. He is a key employee at Network Tallahassee where he seems to be moving up the ladder quite quickly. He is a warm, wonderful, humorous and thoughtful person. Everyone should have a son like him.
Ryan is the Don Juan of the family. He is gorgeous! And he knows it. A very charming and gregarious person, Ryan is the Manager of 2 Eckerd Drugs Photo Labs in addition to be being an area trainer. He, too, is a very hard and dedicated worker who is recognized company-wide for his abilities and winning personality.
Rory is the brain of the bunch, but has a wonderful sense of humor, also. He loves a good joke, but is funny - not mean. Rory went into the Army 2 years ago, where he received a great scholarship. He wants to be a doctor. As the third son of a single mom he has the vision to realize that medical school is going to cost big time, so he may as well have the government pay for it. He is stationed at Schofield Barracks, in Hawaii. He describes it as hell in the middle of paradise. He enjoys the breathless beauty of the state but it is very expensive and his pocket is always empty. Gasoline has been over $2.00 a gallon there since before we all started complaining about it stateside. He is a good soldier and well respected by his superiors as well as his fellow soldiers. I sure do miss him!
Until recently, I worked for Stetson University in the Development Department. I was a Senior Secretary and my job was to make contact with Alumni so my boss could hit them up for money. It could be more complicated than that but, basically, that's what we did.
I am very active in the community and do quite a bit of volunteer work. I have been a volunteer with the Sheriff's Department for almost 10 years and have served on various boards of directors; Little League, Civic Association, Republican Women's Club, Public Safety Committee etc.
I was privileged to have been requested to act as the secretary of the DeBary Feasibilty Committee, a neighboring community looking into becoming a city. I also was secretary for the DeBary Charter Committee - and yes, DeBary did become a city and is becoming pretty upscale and affluent. It was very exciting working with various government officials around the State and with our Federal government senators and representatives. It was a fun and exciting process. Deltona became a city just 4 years ago and most likely will be the largest city in Volusia County - larger even than Daytona Beach, at the conclusion of the census.
I am very involved with my church, The Deltona Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. I, quite naturally, sing in the choir. I have been asked to sing and lead a Christmas program for the City of Deltona. I entertain at club meetings and have been a member of The Sweet Adelines, Harmony Incorporated and Stetson Choral Union. Singing is still the love of my life.
I manage to stay busy and do not miss shoveling snow one bit! I love waking up to the sound of singing birds and seeing blue skies every single day! It is as exciting today as it was the first time to witness a space launch. It is unbelievably awesome to see it from the beach at night!
After having been living in Florida all these years I was amazed to discover that Steve Rajtar (class of 69) lives just down the pike a ways from me. He discovered me when he was working on his reunion. Since then he and his lovely wife, Gayle, and I have dined together and Steve and I are collaborating on a project. We are writing a 2-volume reference book on locations of war monuments and memorials from the Spanish-American War to the present day. It is a huge project, of which my contributions are rather small, but it is quite interesting, to say the least.
Life is good but I am always looking out for ways to make it better. If you ever come down my way (to go to Disney, perhaps?), be sure to look me up!
My years at Maple are full of fond memories. If my boys only knew of some of my capers.........

I would like to thank all the people that worked to keep the reunions going. Our lives become so hectic and connected with our immediate families that it is very nice to see so many fellow classmates to remind us that we were young :) - and more important that many of us have very parallel lives. Hopefully, as retirement gets closer, we can look forward to more time to see old friends from our past from MHHS.
Right now, I am dug into the trenches with 2 teenage sons at home and a 21-year-old daughter away at college. I wish I could live my life a second time over - in her shoes. This generation has clearly figured out (sooner than we did) that life is short -and they seek out life experiences of their choice, not ours.
I have been happily married for 26 years. My husband and I lived in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, for about 10 years, and returned to North Canton, Ohio, in 1984, to raise our children. We are very glad we could be closer to family. I regret, once we did return, that I did not stay closer to old high school friends. This web page is great! I only hope, with my busy work schedule, I'll take the time to use it and rekindle some long-lost friendships.
So much happens in our lives and it's very hard to fill in the gaps - but we can't stop trying. All our joys, all our sorrows, make us better able to deal with each day we must face anew. And it is sharing our lives that makes others' lives a little brighter or their load a little lighter.
I get inspiration, laughter, and encouragement from classmates. The Lord has been so good to me. At this point in my life, I just try to aim for inner peace and the ability to reach out to those God sends my way. After graduating from MHHS, I attended Kent State University, where I majored in Sociology, and minored in Psychology and Library Science. I graduated magna cum laude, in December, 1973. On July 20, 1974, I married Paul Runevitch, brother of Helen Runevitch Romanov (MHHS 1970), at St. Barnabas Catholic Church, in Northfield Center, OH. We'll celebrate our 34th anniversary in 2008. My parents, Henry(88) and Anita(83) moved in 1972 from our house on Oakwood Ave. in Maple Hts. to Northfield Center. They moved in 2003 to a house in Berea, just down the street from where I live.
Paul and I started dating after I asked him to be my prom date in April, 1970. He graduated from Chanel High School in 1968, and from John Carroll University with an Accounting degree in 1974. He got his MBA from Baldwin-Wallace College in 1981. Paul is employed as the Chief Financial Officer at Red Head Brass in Shreve, OH, near Wooster, which is quite a commute from Berea. In his spare time, he enjoys performing in various community theatre plays and musical productions.
Our first home was a Seneca Hills apartment in Broadview Hts. Jennifer Lynn (Jennie), our older daughter, was born at Parma Community Hospital on August 31, 1975. We moved to Laurel Dr. in Berea in July 1976, where we began many years of community involvement in such organizations as Berea Jaycees/Jaycee Women, Welcome Wagon Club, Southwest Circle of Friends, and PTA among others. Our younger daughter, Rebecca Lee (Becky), was born on March 12, 1980 at Southwest General Hospital in Middleburg Hts. We moved to our present home on Wallace Dr. in Berea in January 1987.
Both of my daughters graduated from Kent State University, my alma mater. After starting out as a Dance major at Wright State University in Dayton, Jennie transferred schools and graduated with a Broadcast Journalism degree from Kent State in December 1998. She worked as a news anchor/reporter at WHIZ in Zanesville, OH, WTWO-TV 2 in Terre Haute, IN, WNDU in South Bend, IN, and is currently the solo weekend news anchor/weekday reporter at WTHR-Ch. 13 in Indianapolis, IN . Becky received a degree in Physical Education from Kent State in 2002, taught physical education at the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland for 4 years, and is now teaching sports skills to children (age 6 months to 12 years) at The Little Gym in Shaker Hts. She also works as an assistant manager at Regal Cinemas in Middleburg Hts.
I am employed as a market research interviewer at Opinion Centers America, in North Olmsted. For most of my life, I was a stay-at-home mom, except for the occasional part-time job as financial conditions required it. That was my personal choice, because I wanted to be the primary caregiver and major influence in my daughters' lives, and I've never regretted it. Berea is a fine community in which to raise a family, and we've made many long-lasting friends here, including our Couples Pinochle Group that has met monthly for over 30 years.
As a community volunteer, I spent over 20 years in various PTAs, from preschool through high school. I have served as an officer and chairman of numerous organizations and committees. My proudest achievements have been co-chairing a successful bond issue campaign to expand the Berea Library and chairing the committee which formed the first county-wide Friends Association for the Cuyahoga County Public Library.
Looking back over the years since those memorable high school days in Maple Hts., I can say that I'm satisfied with the choices I've made, I've been enriched by the friendships I've developed, and I'm happy with the family ties I've maintained with my parents, my brothers and their families, Paul's family, and my children. At this point in my life, I find myself pretty content, but seeking more spiritual fulfillment. Life hasn't been perfect, but I am grateful for my many blessings!
I enjoyed attending past class reunions, and seeing former classmates and friends. I hope to help us all maintain contact with each other between reunions and make some new friends via our class website. Please e-mail me so we can become re-acquainted!

Suzanne (twin sister) and I were jewelers for years and decided to fight the cure for Lupus (which she has). I am the Vice President for the Cleveland Chapter. Hi class!
I had to take an early retirement because of a back injury I got at work that turned into arthritis. I thought only old people got arthritis! I was working as an industrial painter at the time. I also worked through the years at a couple other factories, managed a produce market, and worked in an auto body shop.
I've been divorced for 25 years and never remarried and have no kids. When I was married, we had a house in Bedford. After the divorce, I moved out to Shalersville. That's right next to Streetsboro. I moved back to Maple Hts. a few years ago to take care of my parents who both had cancer. I still live in Maple Hts. now, but plan to move to the country within a couple years.
I have a 1968 Firebird that I've owned for 31 years. I did a little work to it and would take it to cruise-ins and car shows, where it won quite a few trophies. I remember there were a lot of guys back in high school that had "muscle cars." Those were special days.
I'm glad to see that there are so many successful people from the "class of '70" and saddened that there are a few that are not with us anymore.
