DREW
(from the liner notes of Great Pianists of
the Twentieth Century: Sviatoslav Richter, by David Fanning, regarding
Richter's legendary performance of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exibition
in Sofia, February 1958):
"It's a performance remarkable for sheer
intensity and sense of abandon. The imperfections are plain to hear, from
the opening Promenade on. But that only serves to prove that great pianism
does not consist of technical perfection plus added extras; rather it has
to do with letting the music play through the artist, of abandonment to
a higher force. A degree of human perfectability is willingly traded for
a glimpse of the superhuman."
