Emma Woodhouse - the main character, Emma is constantly trying to be a matchmaker to her friends, often with hilarious consequences
Mr. Woodhouse - Emma's somewhat elderly father, he is constantly worrying about his and everyone else's health
Isabella - Emma's older sister who is married to John Knightley, Isabella lives in London with her husband and four children
Mr. John Knightley - Isabella's husband
Mr. George Knightley - John's brother, Mr. Knightley is a close friend of the Woodhouse's; Mr. Knightley is about the only person who finds fault with Emma
Mrs. Weston - formerly Miss Taylor, Emma's governess and friend who marries at the beginning of the movie
Mr. Weston - Mrs. Weston's husband who is constanlty cheerful and good humored
Frank Churchill - Mr. Weston's son by a previous marriage, he has never been to visit his father
Mr. Elton - the local vicar and one victim of Emma's matchmaking attempts
Harriet Smith - Emma's close friend who is below her socially and does not know her parantage
Mrs. Bates - Mr. Woodhouse's old friend who is past everything except cards and eating
Miss Bates - Mrs. Bates' old maid daughter, she lives with her mother and is constantly cheerful and constantly talking
Jane Fairfax - Mrs. Bates' granddaughter and Miss Bates' niece, she is accomplished but reserved, which causes Emma to dislike her
Miss Augusta Hawkins - she becomes Mrs. Elton, Mrs. Elton is stuck up, and she and Emma share a mutual dislike of each other
Mr. Perry - the local apocathary
The Coxes - a local family who owns an estate, but whom Emma sees as beneath her family
The Campbells - the family with whom Jane Fairfax was raised
