Abuko Nature Reserve

Abuko Nature Reserve is located close to the village Lamin. The Nature Reserve was founded in 1968. The reserve is approximately 105 hectares and contains fifty of the most common tree species of The Gambia.

Through the reserve runs a stream which attracts a great number of birds, reptiles and mammals. Over 270 of bird species in a large variety have been recorded in this area. Amongst others, Giant kingfishers, Hamerkop, Paradise flycatcher and Violet touraco.

Abuko also houses different groups of three of the four species of monkeys found in The Gambia: Red patas, Red colobus and Green vervet.

In the reserve there is also an education center which tells about the nature in The Gambia and the problems nature has in this country.

In the animal orphanage lions, hyena's and monkeys are kept as permanent residents. The orphanage is also used as temporary shelter for other animals.
