Dreadlocks are a fun hairstyle that is easy to maintain. Welcome to my dreadlocks page. I would like to share with you my knowledge of dreadlocks.
Making your dreadlocks
The best way to start your dreadlocks if you have Caucasian or Asian hair is the backcombing method. When you start dreadlocks with the backcombing method you will need dread wax, residue free shampoo, a metal comb, and a pack of rubber bands. For detailed instructions for making dreadlocks with the backcombing method see the instructions section of the DreadHeadHQ website.
If you are starting dreadlocks with African hair or extremely textured hair see the Knatty Dread website. They have instructions for making dreadlocks with four different methods depending on your hair length.
Taking care of your dreadlocks
Dreadlocks are the easiest hair style
and they are really easy to take care of. The most important thing you can do
to ensure a healthy set of dreadlocks is wash them at least twice a week with
a shampoo that doesn’t leave residue behind, if you do this your dread
locks will lock up in less than 3 months.
The next thing you should do to help your dreadlocks out is palm rolling and
twisting. You should get in the habit of palm rolling and twisting your dread
locks whenever your hands are free. The more you palm roll and twist your dreadlocks,
the faster the hair will lock. Palm rolling also helps push loose hairs into
your dreadlocks. And twisting will help loose hair at your roots grow into your
dreadlocks instead of away.
Washing your dreadlocks
All you have to do when you have dreadlocks is wash your hair with a shampoo that doesn’t leave residue behind. You do not need any type of conditioners or moisturizers. Actually conditioners and moisturizers work against your dreadlocks because they slow down the locking process by lubricating your hair and preventing it from locking. Residue free shampoo actually helps dreadlocks lock up, by removing all residues left behind from other shampoos. The best shampoo I have found for my dreadlocks is made by DreadHeadHQ.
Products for your dreadlocks
When you start your dreadlocks you
will need wax, shampoo, and locking accelerator. DreadHeadHQ has the very best
dreadlocks wax; it has a strong hold so it holds new dreadlocks together. It
is also very pliable so you can work with your dreadlocks, and fix any loose
hairs you have while the dread wax is on your dread locks.
It is essential that you use a residue free shampoo when you have dreadlocks.
It is the only kind of shampoo that actually helps dreadlocks lock up. Many
companies claim that their shampoo is good for dreadlocks, but the truth is
that they contain so many residues from conditioners to scents, that they actually
work against your dreadlocks by lubricating your hair and keeping it from knotting
and locking up. You can tell if a shampoo is residue free by washing your hands
with the shampoo. After you have washed and dried your hands, smell them, if
there is a scent on your hands the shampoo is not residue free. Dreadlocks are
also known for holding dirt and scents. When you have normal straight hair you
brush your hair everyday, brushing your hair helps remove residues but, because
you do not brush your hair everyday when you have dreadlocks you are not able
to remove residues that are left behind in your hair. The residues eventually
build up in the inside of your dreadlocks, and hold water which can lead to
mildew problems. If mildew starts growing in your dreadlocks the only way to
get it out is to bleach your dreadlocks. If that doesn't work you have to cut
your dreadlocks off. And nobody wants to do that, so the best thing to do is
to start your dreadlocks off the right way, and only use residue free shampoo
on your dreadlocks.
