Chapter 3: Melodye

“Okay children we have two new students in our class.” Iris walked shyly into the classroom; she could feel everyone’s eyes on her. It had been so long since she had been around this many children. She didn’t really know how to act, or what to say.

She was followed closely by another girl her age.

“Young lady,” The teacher motioned towards Iris, “What’s your name?”

“Iris…” She replied.

“And you?” The teacher turned her attention to the other girl.

“My names Melodye.” The girl replied.

“Students Melodye is an exchange student from America so I’d like you to show her the utmost respect.” Most the students didn’t really seem all that interested in either of them, which made Iris feel more comfortable. She glanced at Davis who was frantically scribbling on a piece of paper. He glanced up at her and flashed her a smile.

“Iris, you can sit next to Davis there, okay dear?” Iris followed the teacher’s instruction and sat down next to Davis.

“What luck.” He said scrunching up the piece of paper and shoving it in his bag.

“Davis, I haven’t been to school in eight years.” Iris said pulling out some books.

“Yeah so, it’s not even hard.”

The teacher started ranting about something and Iris soon lost interest. She let her gaze wander over to the window. She remembered why she hated school so much; it’s so boring already. She found the new exchange student giving her a funny look. Iris woke up from her daydream; she must have been staring right at her. She blushed and snapped her attention back to her books.

“See this work isn’t all hard,” Davis said looking at a stick man he’d drawn on his book.

“You’re not even doing anything.” Iris pointed out.

“Exactly, you don’t even have to do anything.”

“I thought the reason you went to school was to do stuff.”

“Don’t be silly, if you want to do work you go to summer school.”

“Oh, okay then.”

**

“So what exactly do you do all day Demiveemon?” Snowmon sat on top a row of lockers with Demiveemon.

“Well the best thing to do is raid the cafeteria.”

“What’s a cafeteria?”

“It’s this wonderful place,” Demiveemon explained waving his arms, “There’s all sorts of goodies everywhere!”

“You mean food?” Polarmon asked.

“You betcha!” Demiveemon jumped up from where he was sitting, “I’m getting hungry thinking of all this food, lets go.”

They took off down the hallways making sure they didn’t get caught. Demiveemon stopped abruptly, causing snowmon to slide and slam into the wall.

“Here it is.” They stood outside a door marked ‘cafeteria’. ”Can you give me a boost.”

Snowmon walked up to the door and braced herself while Demiveemon climbed on top of her.

“Ouch hurry up your heavy.” Snowmon whined trying to hold her partner up.

“I nearly got it… nearly…” Demiveemon had grabbed hold of the door handle and was trying with his stubby little hands to open it.

“I think I hear someone coming!” Snowmon said panicky.

“Don’t move…I’ve…nearly…got it.” He managed to open the door just in time as Snowmon fell over and Demiveemon was sent crashing to the ground.

“Jackpot!” He said getting up and strolling in. Snowmon looked around cautiously before following Demiveemon into the cafeteria.

She was in shock by how much food she saw. Everywhere, there was food everywhere.

Demiveemon jumped up onto a chair and then onto a tabletop. His eyes glazed over when he saw the bountiful amounts off goodies.

“This is heaven.” He mumbled. Immediately starting to stuff as much food into his little mouth as possible.

Snowmon on the other hand was having enough trouble getting up on the chair.

“Heeeelllp.” She whined. Demiveemon head popped out from over the table,

“Demiveemon I can’t get up.”

“Hold on,” He jumped down onto the chair and grabbed her mitted hand, and helped her climb onto the table. When Snowmon saw the mountains of food sitting there for their dispose, she was truly moved.

“Thank you oh great and mighty lord.” She whispered. She then followed Demiveemon in shoving all sorts of food in her mouth.

“Hey what do you think you’re doing.” They both froze in place at the ominous voice.

“Run.” Was all Demiveemon said, and with that they jumped off the table and scampered off.

“Damn strange cats, they really need to stop letting lab animals free. Oh well.” The cafeteria lady grabbed a wastebasket and swept what was left of the rubbish and walked off.

“Hey I’m sorry I’m late guys.” Cody said running up to the digidestined group,

“you haven’t started without me?”

“No, were just starting.” TK replied.

“So what’s the meeting for?” Cody asked.

“It’s the welcome of a new digidestined.” Davis said

“A new digidestined? Who?” TK asked suspiciously.

“Why it’s my good friend Iris.” Davis said bringing Iris into the circle of friends.

“You’re a digidestined?” Cody asked, “How do you know?”

“She’s got a digivice, just like us.” Yolie said holding up her own.

“Show us,” TK said moving closer to Iris. She pulled out her digivice and handed it to TK, “Yup, who’s your digimon?”

“I am.” A small voice piped up. Snowmon walked proudly into the circle, standing next to Iris.

“That’s so cute,” Cody said bending down to get a closer look.

“So where did you come from?” TK asked Iris.

“The digiworld.” Iris replied quietly.

“You were in the digiworld?” Cody asked turning his attention away from Snowmon to Iris.

“Yeah I’d been stuck in there for eight years,” She explained, “That was till Davis saved me.” She looked thankfully at Davis.

“Woah, I don’t know if I could last eight years in the digiworld.” TK commented.

“It is an awful long time to be in there,” Kari chimed in, “But you know what happens when new digidestined are found.” She started

“It means there’s trouble.” TK finished.

“Wait a minuet,” Yolie interrupted, “Just because we found a new digidestined doesn’t mean that there’s trouble.”

“Yeah it does, every time there’s new digidestine, there’s new evil. It’s happened three times.” Kari explained, “That’s enough proof for me.”

“I guess you’re right, but what could be threatening the digiworld now? And is there any more new destined?” Davis asked thoughtfully

“I think I know who another is.” Iris spoke up.

“You do?” Yolie asked intrigued, “Who is it?”

“That exchange student.”

“You think so?” Cody asked

“Yep, I can tell.” She replied.

“How?” TK asked, “I don’t think any of us have just been able to know who’s a digidestined or not.”

“I don’t know, it’s just a feeling I get, and I know it’s because of digidestined cause I got the same feeling when I met Davis.” She explained hastily

“How do you know you it’s not because you like him.” Kari said nudging Iris in the ribs. She blushed a deep crimson, along with Davis.

“Well because I got the feeling when I met you and Yolie, and I’ve got it now. I can tell you guys are digidestined.”

“Nah I was only playing with you.” Kari said laying her hand on Iris shoulder.

“So you think the exchange student is a destined?”

“I’m not completely sure, but it’s worth a look into.” She said helpfully.

“What I want to know is, what’s threatening the digiworld?” Davis asked himself.

“The only way to find out is to go and see for ourselves.” Cody said

“Yeah he’s right, we should all go into the digiworld, for a little picnic or something.” Yolie chirped happily, “I haven’t been in there for ages.”

“You make it sound like it’s some kind of amusement park.” Davis said seeing how Iris flinched at the thought of going back.

“Well we don’t necessarily need to go on a picnic, but we do have to find out what’s going on.” TK said helpfully

“Well we don’t even really need to go in there, we could just ask someone who has been in there half her life,” Kari said looking at Iris.

“I-I heard of an evil digimon called Witchmon, I’ve never actually seen her but I’ve seen what she can do.”

“Well that’s a good enough reason for me!” Davis shouted, ”We’re gonna go check it out.”

“Davis I don’t think we should really do that.” TK stopped him, “We don’t even know what we’re up against, Iris clearly said she’s never really seen Witchmon, we have no idea how powerful she is. We should just concentrate on finding the other digidestined.”

“TK’s right Davis, we don’t know what we’re up against, rushing in there and getting our digimon hurt will accomplish nothing.” Kari reasoned with Davis.

“Fine.” Davis muttered, “Everyone listens to stupid TB, I’m supposed to be the leader here, but no TJ is just too good.”

“Shut up Davis, I’m not in the mood for your whining.” Yolie scalded him.

Iris watched in shock as most of the group shunned Davis while they continued with their own plans. She personally thought that going to the digiworld wasn’t a bad idea. She had learned a few things living in the digiworld for eight years, one of those lessons was, attack is the best form of defense. In other words, you attack or be attacked. If it weren’t for the fact that she never wanted to see the digiworld ever again, she would have backed Davis up full heartedly.

“Oh I got to be going,” Cody said breaking away from the group, “It’s sushi night, I wouldn’t miss my moms sushi for anything, it was nice to meet you.” He said to Iris before running off.

“I better be going too, I gotta look after the shop tonight.” Yolie too broke away from the group and ran off.

“We should be going home too Iris.” They said their good-byes and departed for Kari’s house.

**

“I’ve had it with you good for nothing idiots.” Witchmon bellowed. She had just disposed of another useless digimon; “if you want something done right you have to do it yourself.” She stood up form her throne, causing it to creak painfully.

“Hey you!” She shouted to a passing digimon.

“Y-yes mistress witchmon.” The unfortunate digimon stuttered.

“Get me my broom and I might just let you live.”

“Yes your evilness.” The groveling digimon scuttled off in search of her broom.

“You’re actually going out? I’m surprised?” A cool composed voice asked. Out of the darkness a small black Gatomon appeared.

“Those idiots don’t know what they’re doing and at the rate I’m going I’m going to disintegrate every digimon in the world.”

“That’s good I’ve been itching to get my claws into action.” The Gatomon said scratching the air with her razor sharp claws.

“Well be expecting lots of action, I too have been itching to blow something up.” They both started cackling maniacally.

**

“So how do you suppose we find out if she’s really a destined or not?” TK asked Kari pulling some books out of his locker.

“Well we could start off by being nice to her.” Kari replied.

“Well here she comes so…” Melodye walked by them and Kari ran after her.

“Hello.” She said catching up to her and walking beside her, “My names Kari.”

“Hi…” Melodye trailed off.

“Umm hey I know your new here and everything so you can hang out with me and my friends if you want.” Melodye glanced at her. Her red hair hanging in two loose plaits under her big cowboy hat. Despite how she tried to hide it her emerald green eyes lit up noticeably.

“Sure.” She smiled and continued walking to class.

**

“This is Davis, and Yolie, Cody, TK and this is Iris.” Kari introduced Melodye to the group, “Everyone this is Melodye.”

Everyone muttered his or her separate welcomes. Iris tried to ignore the feeling deep in her stomach, but it was so strong. This wasn’t it though; there was more to come. She wasn’t sure how she knew that it just came to her.

“Hey Yolie, Ken’s coming back today hey?” Kari asked.

“Yeah…” Yolie replied she seemed to be deep in thought.

“Who’s Ken?” Iris asked Davis.

“Ken, he’s a destined as well. He went on holidays to America. His story is a strange one.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well before he joined our group he was a bad guy.”

“You mean he fought you?”

“That’s right, he went all crazy, but then he turned good, and now he’s a good guy.”

“Oh…” Iris trailed off into thought, “How many digidestined are there?”

“I don’t know, there all around the world. There’s like one digidestined for every country or something like that.”

“But there are how many here in Japan only.”

“You’r right, well I don’t know, I just know that one time I had to go to America and help out all the digidestined there.”

“Who were the first digidestined?”

“Well there’s Tai, Matt, Sora, Joe, Izzy, Mimi, Kari and TK. They were the first digidestined. And then there’s me and Kari and TK and Yolie and Cody, were the second digidestined to go into the digiworld. But now the digiworld is in more trouble, that’s where you guys come in.”

Iris’ eyes wandered over the group, how did these kids manage to save the digiworld? From what she had experienced the digiworld was a string of relentless attacks. You can’t sleep at night, in case some nocturnal prowler found you. It was always best to sleep in the day and move in the night.

She also found that it was impossible not to kill the law of nature set in when you’re out there, in the wilderness. Kill or be killed. It was as simple as that. These children obviously didn’t fully comprehend what they were up against. If they don’t want to fight they’re going to get killed, and they seemed like the kind of people who would say ‘fighting should always be a last resort’. Well they were wrong; fighting should be the first action.

“Hey Iris, you coming or you just gonna sit there?” Davis asked snapping her out of her trance.

“Sorry.” She said getting up and following the group.

“What where you thinking about?” Davis inquired.

“Nothing..”

**

“C’mon, hurry up.” Kari yelled impatiently.

“Hold on, how the hell do you do this thing up, oh wait here we go.” Iris walked out of their room; she was frantically pulling on her shirt trying to fix it.

“No, no don’t do that, it’s supposed to be like that.” Kari scalded smacking her had away so she could get a better look. Kari was almost jealous of Iris she was so pretty. She had such a good figure; the clothes she was wearing looked so good.

She was wearing a tight orange sleeveless turtle-neck that had spots of silver material sewn onto it. Down the bottom she wore plain blue jeans that flared at the bottom almost covering her big strap orange shoes. She was one of them girls that looked good in anything.

Her hair was so beautiful as well, she had insisted that it be kept in the two pig-tails it had been in before, but after a good wash and comb it looked even better.

“How do I look?” She asked timidly.

“You look beautiful, but we have to go, I told Melodye we’d be there by now.”

They started running, but Iris kept tripping on her shoes.

“Ow Damnit! Kari wait up I can run in these crazy shoes.” She tried her best to keep up with Kari but it was hopeless. She pulled off her shoes and threw them aside, “ Kari wait up!” Iris ran up to Kari panting.

“What happened to your shoes?” She asked, looking at her feet.

“I couldn’t run in them, so I took them off.”

“You didn’t have to throw them away.” Kari said looking behind Iris, “Oh it doesn’t matter, lets just go.”

**

“Davis please tell me what wrong.” Demiveemon pleaded.

“Nothings wrong, I’ve just got a headache.”

“Davis you can’t keep saying that, how stupid do you think I am…don’t answer that.” Demiveemon jumped up onto the desk Davis was sitting at. Avoiding old smelly socks, and various other pieces of rubbish.

“Davis I’m just gonna keep bugging you until you tell me what’s wrong.”

“I already told you there’s nothing wrong with me.” Davis snapped

“I’ll start singing.” Demiveemon threatened. Davis said nothing.

“Because we are living in a material world…” Demiveemon started singing.

“I’m not gonna tell you!” Davis yelled over Demiveemon’s awful singing.

“And I am a material girl!” He wailed. Davis covered his ears but it didn’t drown out the horrible wailing Demiveemon was emitting.

“Alright, alright I’ll tell you just please stop singing!” Davis yelled, he immediately stopped singing and sat down on the desk.

“Well you know how you were telling me the other day about how I’m supposed to get over Kari? Well I’ve been thinking and well I hate to say it but your right.”

“See I knew it! You knew I was right all along!” Demiveemon gloated.

“Uhh yeah, anyway as I said I’ve been thinking and well Iris is really pretty and nice and she kinda reminds me of Kari anyway.” Demiveemon stared in shock at Davis.

“You mean you’re just over Kari, just like that?”

“No, I never said that, I just said I think I kind like Iris a bit…”

“Well what are you going to do about it?”

“I don’t know what should I do?”

“Well this is just my advice but I think you should just talk to her, alone.”

“What is that going to accomplish?”

“Familiarity breeds contempt”

“What?”

“Just trust me.”

“Said the spider to the fly.”

**

“Hello is Melodye home?” Kari asked politely.

“Sure, I’ll just go and get her, come in.” The girls followed Melodye’s host mother into their apartment.

“Melodye, there’s some girls here to see you.” They heard her say.

“This place is so nice.” Iris commented looking at a glass cat ornament sitting on a coffee table.

“Hey guys,” Melodye said coming out to the living room, “You wanna come into my room?” She led them down a hallway and into her room.

“Your house is so nice.” Kari said.

“It’s not my house, I’m just staying here remember?”

“Oh yeah…” They stood in silence for a moment.

“Hey are you guys going to that concert on the weekend?” Melodye asked.

Kari started to answer but was cut off by a mumbled scream coming from Iris bag.

“Did your bag just scream?” Melodye asked.

Iris shoved her elbow hard into the side of the bag, there was another muffled cry, and then it went quiet.

“Uhh no that was… me.” Iris explained clearing her throat. She took off her backpack and put it gently on the ground.

“What’s in your bag?” Melodye asked suspiciously.

“Umm new clothes, yeah we just went shopping.” Iris said laughing nervously.

“Can I see?” She asked going for the bag.

“No!” Melodye yelled snatching up the bag, “It-it’s tradition in my family. We’re not allowed to show people our clothes until we wear them, yeah.” She said hopefully.

“Yeah right, gimmie a look.” Melodye tried to grab the bag off Iris but found it was much to heavy for her. She dropped it to the ground with a thud, it cried out in pain and started moving of its own accord.

Melodye unzipped it and jumped back in surprise as a small white cat and a little snowman jumped out. She stared at them in shock.

“Digimon?” She mumbled.

“You know about digimon?” Kari asked picking Gatomon up and holding her like a stuffed toy.

“Is it safe to come out now Melodye?” A small voice came from the pile of stuffed toys in the corner of the room. Melodye just nodded in reply. A small round bird like digimon much like Poromon jumped out of the toys and ran over to Melodye.

“I guess it’s safe to say you know about digimon.” Kari pointed out.

“Yeah I just didn’t know anyone else had them, let alone my new friends.”

“I knew from the first moment I saw her.” Iris said, “you’re a digidestined aren’t you?”

“A what?” Melodye asked genuinely confused.

“The digidestined are special people who are destined to save the digiworld.”

Kari explained, “each one of us has our own digimon.”

“So there are more?”

“All our friends that you met today are digidestined.”

“They are, so all of them have digimon just like flamon?”

“Yup, like Gatomon here.” Kari motioned to the cat digimon in her arms.

“Yup and you may know there are many more.” Gatomon said helpfully.

“I can’t believe it, how did you know though?”

“That’s where I come in,” Iris butted in, “I can sorta tell which people are digidestined.”

“How?”

“I don’t know I just get his feeling in my stomach whenever a destined is around.”

“That’s pretty cool.”

“Hey Melodye were gonna go meet the other digidestined, everyone’s in town so we arranged a meeting, you wanna come?”

“Really?” she asked excited.

“Sure.” Kari said with a smile, “We better hurry.”

**

“Hey guys we’re here.” Kari yelled running up to the digidestined group, Iris and Melodye following close behind.

“Kari, I was beginning to think you’d never show.” Tai said walking up to his younger sister and wrapping her in a hug.

“Hello brother, how are you?”

“I’m fine.” Kari looked over to the others.

“Hey guys.” She walked over to join the group. “How’s everyone.”

There was a chorus of ‘I’m good’ and ‘doin’ fine’

“Who are they?” Izzy asked motioning over to the two new girls.

“Huh oh, “Kari signaled for them to come over, “This is Iris, and Melodye, they’re the new digidestined.”

“New digidestined?” Joe asked, “That can’t be good, last time there was a new digidestined the digiworld was being assaulted by the digiemperor. No offense Ken.” Ken just waved his hand and dismissed it.

“You mean there’s new evil in the digiworld?” Sora asked concerned as always.

“Apparently there’s an evil digimon that goes by the name of Witchmon.”

“Yes, I got an email form Gennai the other day.” Izzy butted in.

“You mean that old guys still alive?” Davis asked scratching his head.

“Yeah, it said something about a new evil and four new digidestined.”

“But there’s only two here. “ Mimi pointed out.

“Obviously they haven’t found the other two yet.” Matt said sarcastically.

“You don’t have to be mean about it you know Matt.” Mimi pouted.

“Enough! We don’t have time to be bickering about little things like that.” Tai said immediately taking on his leader role.

“But Tai…” Mimi whined

“No butts, we need to get rid of this Witchmon before she becomes a real problem.”

Everybody cheered and started talking at once.

These digidestined were obviously all very close. Iris thought to herself.  Suddenly Iris got this unexplainable feeling of dread, like a shiver down her spine. She spun around and saw a small cat like digimon, much like Kari’s just black, scramble up a tree.

She looked around cautiously. That was it, she saw a black shadow standing on top of a nearby building. In a flash of bright light a huge ball of fire was heading strait for Davis. Iris acted on her instincts.

“Davis!” She yelled jumping and knocking him out of the way of the fireball. This caught everyone’s attention and they all scampered out of the way as the fireball slammed into the ground.

When the ball had disintegrated everyone gasped at what lay before them. A solid wall of ice surrounded Iris. Next to her a huge polar bear stood.

“What’s that?” Mimi asked hiding behind Matt.

“That’s Megapolarmon, she digivolves from Polarmon, her attack is icicle cannon.” Izzy said reading off his laptop.

“Hey that means Polarmon digivolved!” Cody pointed out.

“Are you alright Iris” It asked releasing her from the ice wall.

“You digivolved?” Iris said happily, she jumped up and hugged the huge bear around the neck. A blinding light surrounded them both and Megapolarmon turned back into Snowmon.

“I was so scared when I saw that big fire ball flying at you, then it just came to me.”

“See it’s not all that hard.” Demiveemon said walking up and patting snowmon on the back, “congratulation.”

“I’ll get you yet digidestined!” Witchmon’s voice echoed throughout the park. They all watched, as a hole seemed to open up in the atmosphere and two black shadows jumped up into it. It immediately closed behind them.

“I’m guessing that was witchmon.” Joe said.

“She really doesn’t like us does she?” Mimi asked herself

“Well that’s what us digidestined are here for!” Tai said strongly, “We’re gonna go and get those evil digimon again.” Everyone let out another Cheer.

A small beeping sound rang out above their celebrations; Joe grabbed his beeper out of the bag he was carrying.

“Oh great, I gotta go guys, another ‘emergency’ with Mrs. Ayda. Sorry guys.” He broke away from the group and ran off.

“I guess I better be going too.” Said Matt, and he too walked off.

Everyone followed suit until the only people left were Tai, Sora, Kari, Iris and Davis.

“Hey Iris,” Davis said walking over to her, “Uh thanks for saving me back there.”

“That’s okay, now we’re even.” She winked and smiled at him.

“Hey Iris, we gotta go now, my moms probably getting worried.” Kari took Iris by the arm and they walked off into the night.
