Social Workers and Adventure- Based Practice

Last Updated: 2/3/02

Double Black Diamond Training Program

These are social workers who use or are interested in adventure-based practice. I have hotlinked e-mail addresses, so you can just click on an e-mail address and send an e-mail to a person if you want to learn more about what they do. If you are a social worker and would like to be added to this list, modify an existing entry, add interests, please go to the submission form at the end of this list.

In an ongoing effort to increase communication I have taken advantage of a service provided for free on Delphi. It is a free forum (and the potential for a chat room) to focus a discussion on social work and adventure based practice. If you would like to participate in the forum simply go to the Social Work and Adventure-Based Practice Forum.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I am beginning to date each entry. I am also going to begin removing those with non-working e-mail addresses. I will also no longer post listings which do not have a valid e-mail address (you may obtain a free e-mail adress on many sites).

Note: Did you know you can search this page using the find command in your browser? Type in a population, state, or other search term and you will be taken to that term. I hope to reorganize this page in the future, but this should help.

Yet Another Note: This site is established for networking purposes. It is inappropriate to use the contact information on this list for any other purposes (marketing, research, solicitation) with out express permission of the owner, Dr. Christian M. Itin, MSW.

Areas of Interest:I am currently a second year MSW student at the University of South Carolina at Columbia. My interest in adventure based therapy began with my BSW placement with homeless women in Rochester, NY. I am interested in wilderness therapy and empowerment training for women. I currently live near the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. I will be graduating with my MSW in May 1999. Are there any other social workers in the area who are interested in establishing an adventure-based therapy program in the Mountains of Western North Carolina? Glad to see so many other interested social workers!!

Areas of Interest:I am a substance abuse counselor graduating with my MSW from the University of MD in May 2001. I work with both adults and adolescents doing outpatient detox, rehab, and aftercare. I am very interested in continuing to work with teens and young adults in substance abuse, combining that with some form of recreation therapy, similar to what outward bound or ropes courses offer. I have been in the substance abuse field for over 5 years and am a recovering alcoholic of 12 years. The recreation aspect interests me because I found it to be a vital part of my own recovery. I am a cyclist, duathlete, skier, backpacker and all around outdoors kinda guy. I am now in Washington, DC, however I am not tied to this area, and would relocate in a heartbeat for the right opportunity in this field. I would love to hear from anyone with the same interests or who has any ideas.

Areas of Interest:I'm an LCSW with too many years of working in a State Mental Hospital in the USA. I have also lived and traveled along the Amazon River near Iquitos, Peru. There I worked with medical groups and Shamans attending the health care needs of deep-jungle villages. I would like to put together a program for at risk youth who might benifit from living and helping others in this setting. It is not a sanitized experience where help is as near as cell phone call to 911. It is the actual raw experience of living in the worlds largest remaining rainforest. I would like to share some thoughts on how to initiate such a program. Perhaps I should forget working with kids and aim this experience at social workers themselves. It's a great cure for burn-out! Talk to me about this.

Areas of Interest:Although my main interest is working with troubled youth and rebuilding their faith in themselves and in those around them, I also have tried elementary "camping" elements for 6 to 12 yr. olds ..to introduce them to this and just for the fun and social elements. I have also worked with handicapped people, but have not developed a program yet for them. My ambitions do not extend beyond the slightly handicapped, as of now,in this group. I hope to establish a small group of dedicated people, who like me , have the interest of taking small groups of "clients" out to activities, where they may achieve measures of personal success that may affect their everyday and personality in a positive way. Thoughts and ideas are welcome. Know anyone in Europe working with this?

Areas of Interest: I currently work with adolescents, women, and substance abuse. Would like to find curriculums and therapeutic programs to help heal the separation, violence, and lack of belonging to self and to community. I believe that environmentally based experiences have great potential for helping us see connections, feelings, and develop skills and the power for developing caring communities. I'm hoping to use the Council of All Beings to evoke empathy, concern, and action for endangered species (including adolescent boys). I use meditation to cut through defenses and connect with dreams, wisdom, and power. I am especially interested in learning more about using horses and other animals as part of a therapeutic program. I'm in the process of buying property on a river and would like to set up some wilderness experiences for women and adolescents (not together).

Areas of Interest:I am a school social worker working with preschool to age 21 and families. Does anyone consider this a form of short-term solutions focused therapy and with the issues surrounding managed care and liability, how is adventure based practice used in the clinics and how is it billed? Do managed care or traditional health insurance companies reimburse for these activities or are most consumers private pay? Does anyone use this as part of their private practice with families? What are the pitfalls of liability one should be concerned with in a clinical (salaried or private) setting? My current organization was able to include it under current liability insurance in the name of education (the program was a State Ed approved program and adventure activites were mandated) but what about in the event of a non-mandated or non-conventional form of therapy such as adventure therapy?

Areas of Interest:I am updating my old entry, as I have gotten married and completed my LCSW certification. I have also moved, etc. My interests, however, are still largely the same, though with some modification: adventure-based counseling; existential therapy; choice theory; the role of faith and spirituality in the healing process; adolescent female issues of depression, eating disorders, and self-mutilation. Currently, I am a school social worker at a Jesuit high school in Chicago. I am also pursuing my PhD at Loyola University in Social Work, and I hope to do my dissertation (some day) on some facet of adventure-based counseling. I am currently not using as many experiential components as I would like to in my school social work; however, in the summers, I work as an Outward Bound instructor for Voyaguer's Ascent program for youth-at-risk.
