Comment:Hi Christian, I am so excited I found this site. I am currently in a masters program in social work at the University of Chicago. I have been interested in using adventure education and experiential education in social work. I received my undergrad at SUNY Cortland which sparked my initial interest. I am currently in the process of deciding on my second year field placement. I would like to try to incorporate my interest in both the outdoors and adventure education with social work but I am having a little bit of trouble finding a placement that will fit my interests. Are you aware of any programs in Chicago that might be of interest to me? If you know of any, please let me know. Thanks Jocelyn

Comment:I found your site for the AEE website. I work in a juvenile court system and my boss wants to know more about therapeutic adventure work specifically with court referred youth, at risk youth, and their families. My bosses are a judge and an attorney and are concrete thinkers. Any leads that specifically address my situation? Enjoyed your site and will spend more time there in the future. Matt

Comment:Christian - I ran across your web page. I have the distinct feeling we might have met last spring (CSWE Conference in Dallas). I was interviewing for faculty positions. I accepted a job in eastern Kentucky (Morehead State University). I am very pleased with the choice. I am writing because I am continuing my research into Ropes Courses and the effects of adventure based therapy (particularly as it applies to adolescents). I would love to hear any comments you may have. My dissertation was on low-elements Ropes Courses and their effect on Family Cohesion. I believe this has meaningful implications for foster families. In what areas is your own research heading? Sam Faulkner, Ph.D., MSSW, MS, LCDC Morehead State University

Most youth I'll be initiating growth will come from the legal system within the state. The program will be centered on either eliminating the 'need' of detention for some of them, reducing detention time, and reducing recidivism rates.

Comment:I lived in Denver 81-89 and worked for Porter Memorial Hosp. as a psychologist (MA lvl). I started working with Outward Bound introducing the DUI population for treatment under the assumption that intensive experience based therapy was better that lengthy sit in a circle and deny therapy. With the data I collected the state changed its attitude regarding this type of short therapy. Unfortunately I never wrote up my results. Anyway, I just stumbled accross your site while doing some research.

Comment:Hi Christian, I came across your web site as I am researching experiential education companies. I currently work for Dr.Clue Treasure Hunts, which is a teambilding company based in San Francisco that uses a treasure hunt model. [The founder of Dr.Clue also sent you an email.] I was looking at your resume and noticed that we have had a lot of similar experiences! I also went to Cornell (ILR '98), I was/am a parent-teen mediator at the Community Dispure Resolution Center in Ithaca, I volunteered at the Cayuga Nature Center's Project Adventure Program, and I was in COE's Wilderness Reflections Program and participated in many COE classes. I am interested in adventure based teambuilding programs and am learning to become a ropes course facilitator [at the California Berkeley Adventure Program--CAL Adventures]. I am living in Albany [No. Berkeley]. I hope to open my own adventure based teambuilding company/conference center/retreat center/summer camp of sorts within the next 5 to 10 years. Anyway, the web site that you've created is great! Well organized, useful, etc. Take care, sabrina

Comment:Hello! Recently, while researching teambuilding companies on the Internet, I came across your terrific company. Your programs are quite interesting and impressive! My own teambuilding company, Dr. Clue, which is based in San Francisco, California [www.drclue.com] ,specializes in off-site, interactive treasure hunts. Since 1995, we've been offering unique, group experiential-learning >activities that bring corporate groups of varying sizes closer together. As we are both involved in teambuilding, there seems to be a clear synergy between your company and mine. I am attempting to build alliances among like-minded organizations. Would you be interested in exchanging website links? You could add your URL to our web "links" page, and we could place our URL on your "links" section. As you know, the more links we get to our websites, more hits, the more popularity, and the higher we rise in the search engines. Please give me your thoughts on this matter. I look forward to hearing from you. Regards, Dave Blum drclue@drclue.com

Comment:Hi Christian, We have met a few times at International Conferences. I am a previous chair of the Awards committee, and have served on the committee for a few years.....I was in New York this past year, and visited with a few minutes at the end of the conference while in the Exhibit Hall, regarding The Union Institute. I am applying for admission there, and I want to teach at a four year Univ. ultimately.....((: I think).....things change with me, often it seems, as my contentment level is even these days, I could DO almost anything and feel some contentment. Ok, not almost anything, BUT, I currently am at MCIWorldCom, as an Experiential trainer of soft skills ......You shared with me a concern about the potential that TUI might not offer me the credentials I seek in my Phd, if I really wanted to teach at the Univ level.....I have done some research and feel fairly confident that I am ok with my decision to attend TUI. Are you familiar with Walden University?? YOUR WEBSITE IS GREAT!

Comment:You really have outdone yourself. This is a fantastic resource. I knew when I got into this field seven years ago that adventure therapy(ABC, etc.) is where my heart is. I'm encouraged to see so many others that believe this as well. I'm searching for a few things: one, a way to develop support for our ABC program within my organization(Northern Tier Youth Services), two, a foundation that provides grants for adventure-based projects, and three, ways I can develop my ABC skills(I have gone to PA workshops). I will use your resources in my search, and if you could respond to me personally it would be appreciated. Once again thank-you for everything you are doing for the adventure realm. Comment:Hi! I've seen your name before -- I subscribed to the adventure therapy list serv this summer, on the suggestion of Mandie Long, another student in the counselor education program at the University of Florida whose name you may also have seen pop up on the list serv. I've been trying to learn as much as possible about internships (and also perhaps a summer job) in adventure therapy on my own, since there is no focus on adventure therapy in my counseling program. I just want to say that I've been wandering around your web page for 1/2 an hour or so, and I'll have to come back and spend a lot more time. I really appreciate all the links that you have; they've been very helpful. Do you happen to know of an adventure therapy-oriented hospital called Inner Harbour in Georgia? I received e-mail from an employee there, checked out their website and it doesn't talk much about adventure/wilderness, so I was curious as to whether you knew anything. Thanks again! ~Sareet Ingber :)

Comment:Hi there, I was interested in learning about the chair of the search committee for the Nazareth position so I checked out your website. Sorta felt like Rocky Mountain High and John Denver-may he rest in peace. I am very interested in your adventure-based practice. My spouse and I have often talked about developing a family therapy practice using the out of doors as a way for families to "meet each other" and join with each other in a fun, rigorous, solution-focused manner. But it doesn't quite have the same feel out here in the flatlands of Indiana as it would in the Alleghenys or Adirondacks of NY. I administered a "wilderness challenge" program back in the days--1980-1983--when I was working at a Boys and Girls Club. We spent week ends at Letchworth with forgive the expression-city kids-I have to admit Letchworth State Park can't compete with the Colorado Rockies. Your ideas for integrating adventure activities is something that we have not taken the next step into a therapy, but something we have done here in Indy for esteem-building (forgive the worn out phrase) , team building and fun out here in Indiana. The Boys and Girls Club camp has a high ropes course--I facilitate the small group discussions pre-post the trips up the trees and the repelling. Its fun to hear and see the kids congratulate themselves on their achievements.! Have you hiked the Adirondacks yet? or the Appalachian trail? Or have you been too busy building up the new Nazareth program? Thanks for allowing me to have a "peak" into your world! Marie Watkins

Comment:Well, first of all, my son's name is Christian and it's a powerful name. He's only five but has an incredible heart and insight. So , I know you're all right! Just happened upon your webpage- I haven't read through all the info you've given but my first thought was Right on- a kindred spirit! I am a strong proponent of practitioners being aware of the link between physical wellness and mental well being. You are definitely on the right track- It is a practice that I have used frequently with my work with adolescents- living in Cape May with a wealth of natural beauty - it's easy to do. I'll email you again after I read on- Glad I found this site.

Comment:Interesting website. Did not really know about adventure based practice before. Since you may and other social workers have patients who are affected by Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, I think you'll find the 2 websites I will include at the end of this entry worthy of posting on your website., Affected people can be CJD victims, family members of victims, people at risk for CJD due to a genetic mutation or prior medical procedures, and people who have received notices that the blood products that they or their children received were withdrawn from the market due to theoretical CJD risk. One strain nvCJD is linked to Mad Cow Disease in England. In a Yale University study 13% of Alzheimer patients were found on autopsy to have CJD. The first website is my website Blood Recall/Withdrawal - CJD, the URL of which I have already listed. The Blood-Recall Withdrawal - CJD website is the website of the Blood-CJD e-mail support/discussion group. The website has information on CJD. Blood-CJD was formed to meet the support needs of people who had received notices that the blood products that they, or their children, received, or that was used in the InVitro Fertilization culture that produced their chidren, were withdrawn from the market because a member of the donor pool died of CJD or was at risk for the disease. Studies are currently being conducted to determine if CJD is transmitted to humans through blood. The infectious agent has been found in blood but there have been no documented cases of blood transmission of CJD in humans. While the risk may be theoretical, the anxiety caused by getting such a notice is real. The Blood Recall/Withdrawal - CJD website is at http://members.aol.com/debbieoney/blood.htm If interested people have The second website is The Many Faces of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease website is a collection of personal stories that put a face on CJD. People tell how it affects their loved ones and how it affects them. They describe early symptoms and progression of the disease. There are currently 27 stories (25 about people who died of CJD, one about a person who currently has CJD and one by a blood recall notification recipient.) The website is continually being updated as new stories are submitted.. The Many Faces of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease website is at http://members.aol.com/stacy91434/cjd/cjd.htm Debbie

Comment:Loved your site, very comprehensive. I am searching for activities to use at The Center for Creative Leadership. I am in charge of our experietial activities and making the linkages between the learnings and the activities. I was interested to see that you are a Cornell alum. I was an asst women's basketabll coach there from 90-95. A great place, but now I am back in NC. I am new to this field and I am trying to learn as much as possible to help our organization. I have a PE background, fitness, health and with my coaching experience it seemed like a good fit. However, I have lots to learn. Glad I found your site. Thanks! I am not sure how to link to your chat, but would like to sometime. I will mark this page as one of my faves.

Comment:Dear Christin, Your website is outstanding. The personal touch makes the website enjoyable and eduational. I have been on the Adventure Therapy list serv for about a month or so now and enjoy it immensely. I am a second year MSW/Criminal Justice student at SUNY Albany and have not participated in the general chat yet, but have contacted individuals through the list that I think have similar adventure therapy interests as myself. I am writing a paper for a family violence couse on using adventure therapy with childern who have been abused or neglectd. I have scoured the printed research and web sites, and am having a hard time finding a program that specifically works with abused or neglected children. I have found many programs and studies that state that adventure therapy works in decreasing certain acting-out, delinquint behaviors and that it helps to increase certain characteristcs that are not present in abused children (self esteem, locus of control), but I was hoping that you could give me some direction in this area. Please e mail me and let me know if you know of any specific program that works with this population or if there is any unpublished material that you are aware of that can assist me in my research. Currently my field placement is at a child and family agency in Albany. A ropes course is utilized with the children while they are in school. Some of these children are placed in a residential facility at the agency, and almost all have been abused or neglected. I am going to interview the director of the program, however, it does not seem as though much statistical information has been gathered to prove the effectiveness of the program. (ALthough there must be some evedence that it works to keep the program funded!!) In summary, I am looking for any leeds you may have in this area. I would greatly appreciate any assistance you could provide. Thanks, Christine Kempkes

This is the first I've heard of Adventure-Based practice and I would be interested in learning more (I spent a short time in the Army and this stuff sounds like a way to combine my interests in mental health and my favorite parts of my Army training). Any information you can give me would be great (I live in Maryland). Thanks.

Comment:Dr. Itin - or should I say, "Dr. Adventure"! I am a Youth Worker with the Nova Scotia Department of Justice. I work at a 120 bed secure custody youth facility. I have been on the front-line for nearly 10 years. My Superintendant (17 years in adult corrections) calls me "a bleeding heart social worker", but the kids know what I'm all about. I am completing my M.Ed. (Counselling) part-time at Acadia University, and have only 3 credit hours to complete. I was enrolled "The Contemplative Practitioner" - a practical meditative program taught by Boulder ex-patriate Dr. Timothy Walker, but I chose to withdraw (in a moment of clarity) as I was deeply engrossed in developing an adventure-based therapeutic camping program for at-risk youth here in Nova Scotia. I took outdoor education courses under the guidance of Dr. Tony Richards at Dalhousie many, many years ago, but I am anticipating getting back into the field (pardon the pun) very soon. I am trying to put together two models that will serve: 1) Alternative school students - those who have left the educational mainstream but are still attending a "school" per se, and 2) a residential camping program that operates on a 90 day cycle. 2 weeks pre-camp (screening/assessment), 28 day wilderness immersion, 45 day community follow up (service learning, individual/group/family counselling sessions, etc). I would appreciate any information that you might pass on re: these kinds of programs. I just put a posting on the AEE listserve, but I have been meaning to contact you for some time ... as tomorrow is my 40th birthday, there's no time like the "present"! I will not be attending this year's AEE conference - too far, too little $$$ - but I look forward to bending your ear (and perhaps bending an elbow) at your favorite blues club in Rochester. I can drive that far - in fact, I made the trip to Project DARE in South River, Ontario in August! I will not take any more of your time - I just wanted to thank you for all your work. If you ever come to Nova Scotia, please look me up. Continued success, Phil Howlett St. Croix, Nova Scotia

Comment:I participated in a Wilderness Education Association course in 1988 through Weslyen college in Middlebury, CT. The one month national standards program was an outstanding introduction to experiential education. Now, I work at NC State University as an administrator (undergraduate student recruitment and educational outreach) in the College of Forest Resources. I earned my B.S. in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management in 1991 and am currently about half way through a Masters Program focusing on tourism and marketing. The WEA experience was to say the least, life changing. I think that the program and the experience generated a sureness in me that has allowed me to excel professionally and personally. Thanks for the guest book that is part of your page. I hope to learn much more about the experiential education process and its applications. Thanks, Kris

Comment: Your work is Incredible! I worked with Marine Institues and I am interested in experiential education. I hope to learn more from your resources. I will find the links to the Marine Institutes, to send to you - they work with adjucated kids using wilderness therapy. I taught biology, swimming instruction, wilderness management, etc. Residing in South Carolina, I hope to move to Colorado for my masters in Social Work, -encourage me! I am taking my time. I just canceled a professional social workers course/visit to Russia to spend time with my father. I plan to run a Marathon in his behalf during the summer solstice in Alaska. I love to travel and would like to change the present condition in the schools here in SC. Developing a mentoring program through the Medical University in Charleston is a possibility, yet life gives me many of those tasks to prevail. That's enough about me. My mother lives and works in Denver, CO. This August I am taking a youth group for a week of wilderness/spirituality therapy. I hope to be able to contact you then. In the mean time, good luck with all your endeavors.

I am in the process of working on getting training to use adventure therapy through Project Adventure. I am doing an independent study on adventure based counseling programs that have been set up in CT. Some of the things that I am looking at are to see how the program is set up, how it is run, what training the staff has, what elelments they they ect.. What I am hoping to do in the long run is to set up a program at a school in Hartford,CT for at-risk kids, that I am presently working at. If you know of anyone that I should contact in CT to help me with this I would appreciate it. Thanks and HAVE A GREAT DAY!!

Comment: Wow! Soooo good to finally access your web site. I, too, am a social worker, experiential educator, and adventure therapist...though currently, I am completeting my MS in Ex. Ed. at Mankato State University.

In the meantime, I am working at a public middle school in the Dean of Student's office, dealing with the kids who get in trouble. I love the kids, but the sytem is stiffling at times. Still, I'm trying not to complain, but work to affect positive change where I can. (Can you tell I'm kinda frustrated?!)

I graduated in June of 1997 with an M.A. in Social Service Administration from the University of Chicago. My focus was clinical social work, combining direct clinical services for families and children, and community organizing. I was an Eleanor Brink Family Support Fellow, and worked with a small group of SSA students, studying and applying the Family Support approach.

All of my practical social work experience has always been in the context of adventure based therapy. Salesmanship Club Youth Camp in TX, the Hyde School in ME, the Princeton-Blairstown Center in NJ, etc.

It's funny that you're a big Outward Bounder...that's where a major seed was planted in my heart (I was 19; I'm now 27), and where I first saw a lot of the heart of Experiential Ed. Now, I'm realizing all of the therapeutic work that they are doing with such diverse populations, and I'm excited about it! I've even just applied to the Voyageur OB School as an asst. instructor for June-Oct.

I'd really love to continue a dialogue with you and get hooked up with more experientially minded social workers. Ours is a profession filled with bureacracy and burnout, in dire need of energy and adventure!

Hope to

Footbag Peace Initiative
Comment: Christian, Here's a social work related resource you may be interested in linking to. Love your site and the connections it provides!

I work with at risk youth using sports, craft and peer education -- using the popular, aerobic sport of "footbag", (known widely as "hacky sack") and the zen craft of footbag making to teach, counsel and mentor at-risk teens as well as to use this sport as a vehicle to promote non-violence and "cultural healing" in the world at large.

This enterprise began as a (88-89) friendship expedition of five American "hack" athletes and peace activists and a filmmaker who journeyed through conflict zones of Guatemala and Nicaragua performing and teaching footbag. Today, the Footbag Peace Initiative is a loose afiliation of footbaggers, teachers, social workers, athletes, sack makers, teens, and others who share the joyous bond of footbag and who use this sport in their work with people.

Those interested in footbag as well as experiential education, youth activism and advocacy, violence prevention curriculum, craftwork, peacework, Central America or global education... will find information,
discussion, pictures as well as extensive links to resources further on. I hope you will visit and pass the URL along.

Comment: G'day Christian

Very useful information. Your input on the AEE list is always worth a read. I'm relatively new to the net discussion and social work. I think I'm still struggling with the concept of being a "social worker" although in reality that is what I've been doing for 8 years or so. Must be something to do with the image of social worker as meddler!

I'm running a pilot program in rural and remote inland Australia. The project aims to research and develop strategies to address youth homelessness. At this stage the program is working in Early intervention and prevention. The preventative strategies have ranged from raising community awareness of youth homelessness issues to the development of radio plays by young people and involvement in various activities such as Student Representative Council Conferences where I've run games framed around the issues leading to Youth Homelessness. Games, Initiatives and fun tend to be a large part of prevention. We've even had cause to import portable climbing walls as there is not a great vertical element here.

The early intervention models are mostly Family mediation and Solution Focussed practice.

I look forward to more lively debate on the AEE list.

Thank you for your inspired work.

Regards

Michael

Comment: As a silent observer of the AEE list, I am always delighted to see one of your posts, for you seem to be ever-diplomatic and empathitic to all.
You have also raised some very important issues for the list users to discuss, and I appreciate that.

Comment: An excellent links page that will help me on my journey through cyberspace. Also some ideas about how I can tidy up my own (new) site. I have copied bits of my books onto my site. If you visit, add /strategy.htm to find the page that is possibly closest to your own interests. I am an AEE member. I enjoyed the Nova Scotia conference and I look forward to attending others.

Comment: I am currently the only social worker employed at an experiential education program developed to intervene with 'disruptive' middle/ junior high school students. We are located in Brevard County, Florida (famous for the space shuttle). Our program is brand new and I would appreciate any resources that could bring assistance to this program. Thank You.

Comment: Thought I'd check out your home page on a PC - trying to find the Florida professor's page to download some of his research course homework and assignment stuff. I'm impressed with you page and with the classes you're teaching. Keep up the exciting work.
