Double Black Diamond Training Program

These are people who use or are interested in adventure-based practice in therapeutic settings. I have hotlinked e-mail addresses, so you can just click on an e-mail address and send an e-mail to a person if you want to learn more about what they do. The list is alphabetical (I am looking for ways to make this list more useful but you can search by common words using your browser). If you would like to be added to this list, modify an existing entry, add interests, please go to the submission form at the end of this list. I reserve the right to edit your entry.

In an ongoing effort to increase communication and to respond to the tendency of people to use this page to post messages; I have taken advantage of a service provided for free on Delphi. It is a free forum (and the potential for a chat room) to focus a discussion on adventure therapy. If you would like to participate in the forum simply go to the Adventure Therapy Forum.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I am beginning to date each entry. I am also going to begin removing those with non-working e-mail addresses. I will also no longer post listings which do not have a valid e-mail address (you may obtain a free e-mail adress on many sites).

Note: Did you know you can search this page using the find command in your browser? Type in a population, state, or other search term and you will be taken to that term. I hope to reorganize this page in the future, but this should help.

Yet Another Note: This site is established for networking purposes. It is inappropriate to use the contact information on this list for any other purposes (marketing, research, solicitation) with out express permission of the owner, Dr. Christian M. Itin, MSW.

Areas of Interest:I currently work for Flex House, a family treatment program under the umbrella of the Enviros Wilderness School Association. This is a wholistic program which strives to address all aspects of conflict within a family. Our primary focus is those families with children between the age of 8 and 12, where there is a history of social services involvment with consideration of child apprehension. Apprehension usually is the result of extreme examples of violence within the home as displayed by the child in the home, school and/or community. Our treatment apporach involves clinical therapy for the family, residential treatment for the child, and in-home support to assist in re integration of the child. Involvment in the program generally lasts 6-10 months. Experiential education has always been a strong treatment component of the program. OVer the last year and half, we have begun to involve the entire family in Adventure based activies, specifically climbing, high ropes course and backpacking. As this is an individualized program, catering to the needs of specific families, each experience is designed with the overall goal of family growth in mind. From these experiences, we have found a heightened sence of a families ability of embrace the skills needed to change their current family situation. I would appreciate any word from family therapists working in a similar manner or with a similar client group. The above information is only a brief outline of what we do. If you would like to discuss more, contact me at my e-mail. Aaron

Areas of Interest:I am a 28year old youth counselor in Washington, D.C. I have spent most of my working life in adventure/at-risk/expedition/residential settings. I have done alot of soul searching and researching to come to the conclusion that my passion lies in the blending of ADVENTURE/CHALLENGES/TRAVEL/TEAMBUILDING with CAREER DEVELOPMENT/LIFE DESIGN. I want to help people move out of their comfort zone(adventure, travel),feel a part of a community(teambuilding and group activities), and have a clearer sense of who they are and what they want to do with their lives(career counseling and life design). I want to do this because it would be stimulating and a hell of alot of fun. In my informal poll of my friends I have come to realize that almost all of them ended up at their respective jobs in almost a halfhazard manner. There are thousands of adventure based programs involving therapy, but in my exhaustive research to find a program similar to what I am looking for I could find only one.

Consequently, I have much experience with horses and other animals like dogs and cats and I believe the more contact a "special" (disabled, emotionally disordered) person has with animals the better off they will be in the future. I cannot explain it but people simply respond to animals in a unique way that some humans simply cannot accomplish except through countless hours of tiring therapy. Areas of Interest:I am a former commander of militarised youth - after being helped by the National Peace Accord Trust in 1995-96. I was introduced to Wilderness Therapy from there i explored more on this program going far as getting lectured by Credo Mutwa(Sangoma,Healer and prophet. We worked a lot with former Sdu'(Self Defence Units-African Nationl Congres) and SPU's (Self Protection Units-Inkatha Freedom Party), This later became a bonus because it was not only healing was also a way of bring two enemies together. I then broadened by introducing an afro context on the program. On the program we deal a lot also about african way of healing through stories, history and using the power of nature itself. I now work with Youth at Risk - young offenders, drug abusers,physicaly/sexualy abused children, peer concellers, militarised youth and youth/adults. Areas of Interest:We have worked extensively in the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina as adventure trip leaders for university groups, commercial groups, incarcerated/high-risk youth, and mental health youth. We developed a high adventuer program for the agency we currently work with. There was no budget, so we incorporated community service so that the kids earned their recreation by providing labor to the organizations that furnished gear for the activity. We are interested in starting our own non-profit to serve these same populations through experiential therapeutic adventure. We appreciate insight, resources, and opportunities that can help us achieve our goals. While we love western North Carolina, we hope to spend much time in and around Utah.

Areas of Interest:I designed a workshop/business entitled "Because of Love . . .," as a means to realign the self-images of at-risk youth, and youth in general. Centrally focused on promoting internal wellness, this workshop teaches youth to rely on self-love as life long empowerment towards peace and happiness; to some love is introduced, to others love is revived. The workshop takes its participants on a journey of self-discovery. Through group discussions, role playing, and journaling, youth embark on a plantform where their comments, fears, frustrations, and questions are not judged or ignored, rather nurtured and explored. This exploration, objectively, leads them to a strong reality--love, more profusely self-love, is the ultimate source of peronal motivation and gratification in life.If any company or organization is interested in implementing this workshop, please contact me at: becauseoflove@eudora.com.

Over the past three years we have launched five two-week expeditions of twenty youth in 27' Navy Whalers, which are open sailing vessels. The staff consists of trained Youth Workers, and highly experienced Skippers. The youth are referred by private and public agencies serving this population. Fees are almost entirely subsidised by private and corporate sponsorship and all equipment and gear is provided. The youth sail (or row when there's no wind) from Nanaimo to Victoria over the course of the two weeks, and camp nightly in the various Marine Parks of the Gulf Islands. In 1997 we were nominated for the North Vancouver "Violence Prevention Award". The program utilizes selected positive peer role models as well as Leaders In Training who have successfully completed prior expedtions. A Web Page is under development.

Areas of Interest:Two years ago, at age 48, I took an early retirement from the financial services industry to begin a second career as a family therapist working with teens and adults with abuse histories on an outpatient basis (group and individual) at Catholic Charities. I particularly enjoy working with abused/neglected teens. I am also an outdoors-lover who likes hiking, backpacking, bicycling, etc. I am interested in getting involved with a therapeutic wilderness camp. I am a nationally certified professional counselor with an MA in Counseling Services from Rider University. I would appreciate the opportunity to talk with someone about what the possibilities might be.

Areas of Interest:I am in my first year of teaching and teach Physical Eduaction and Health, and Outdoor Education. My Degree did not help me in teaching Outdoor Education. I have learnt a great deal on the job, but am always in need of extra help with techniques and instructional 'stuff' so as to give my students the best possible experience of the outdoors. So far I have done units with them on Oceansports, Bushwalking, Snowsports and HIgh Ropes. I am keen to extend the amount that I can offer them including canoeing, sailing, more rope stuff, abseiling etc. If you have any info that could help, please email it to me or simply direct me to good websites that I can obtain info for free. Thanks, Ben.
