The Longest Fence in the World
is the 9,000 km dingo fence.   This fence starts west of Brisbane in Queensland, skirts the New South Wales border and then runs down into South Australia, ending at the sea near Eucla.   This fence was built by graziers with the materials being supplied by State Governments, to keep the dingo from sheep country.  The fence is high and supported by steel posts with gates about every 50 km.  Maintainence is vital.

The dingo is Australia's wild dog, a legendary killer of sheep. It has attacked man, although it usually poses no risk.   It cannot be tamed.  The Aborigines kept numbers at bay by having yearly puppy hunts.  The dingo only has one litter per year, and does not bark.  It lives in scrub country and also can be found in semi desert areas.

Lake Eyre
A most unusual lake, it was on this lake that Donald Cambell broke the world land speed record in 1964.
It's the lowest point in Australia, being 15 metres below sea level, its usually covered with salt, not water.  It only has water in it about once every 25 years and very seldom fills.  9300 square km of shimmering salt is an awesome sight.   You will find Lake Eyre in South Australia.  In 2001, it almost filled and many travelled to see this most unusual sight.  A once in a lifetime vision.
In Queensland we have a town named '1770'Cook landed there in that year, we also have a 'Cooktown' further up the coast.

The Flying Doctor Service had its beginnings at Cloncurry in 1928, founded by the Reverend John Flynn.  He was called 'Flynn of the Inland'  and was responsible for communication in the outback via the pedal radio.

Australia has the largest ant in the world, the "bull ant or bulldog ant".  It has a sting similar to a bee.   I've been stung a couple of times while gardening, and you certainly know about it - 'ouch '.

Hotels in Australia are called 'Pubs', also known as 'watering holes'.

If the cabbie tells you to put your port in the boot, would you know what to do?  Simple, put your suit case in the trunk.

Australia is the largest Island and also the smallest Continent.

Australia has some of the oldest known rocks.  Scientists have discovered rock crystals dating back some 4.3 billion years.   This means that the rocks were part of the Earth's original crust.

The inland region of Australia is mostly flat desert  country that is known as the "the bush".
