There's Something About Mary

Starring Cameron Diaz, Ben Stiller, Chris Elliot, Matt Dillon, a dog-named Puffy, and other people.

Sure, this movie came out a while ago.  No, I hadn’t seen it before. What cued me to pick this movie the other day was its ranking of #1 in the list of videos picked in hotel pay per view situations.  I think Apocalypse Now came in second.Wow, what a contrast!  This movie is the Airplane of romantic comedies, i.e. every joke in the book is thrown in and nothing is sacred.  Ben Stiller is excellent as a high school student, and it’s weird to watch heart throb Matt Dillon in the role of a smarmy loser.  The physical humor is topnotch, even though the level of it is sophomoric.  The plot is enhanced by the introduction of a developmentally delayed brother, as he has a recognizable personality and role, but why Mary had to be an orthopedic surgeon is beyond me.  Especially when you never saw her see a patient or work overtime.  Isn’t being beautiful, nice, kind, quirky, and altruistic enough?  Must Mary have also become a successful and wealthy orthopedic surgeon in 13 years in order to attract such male ardor?  I think not.  This movie gets four stars for making me laugh until I cried about four times.
