Beer me

Here's a pic of the insid of my latest toy - my Homebrew Keg Fridge. This pic is of one of the 5 gallon kegs as well as the CO2 canister and a five gallon Carboy filled with a tasty brew to age it for a month or so prior to kegging it. Last week I brewed a nice Brown similar in fashion to Newcastle and I'm going to brew a Belgian Wit this week sometime which seems to be all our friends favorites when they come to drink my beer.

Hello everyone!!!

Well yesterday Dave, Greg (he is also a new resident in the program), and myself went hiking in Mill Creek Canyon. We used our new REI hiking boots, hats, and Camelbacks, and set out map in hand. We hiked for about two hours and climbed a fairly good grade...(my ankles and hamstrings are sore), and took some fabulous pictures. They will be on the website soon. Dave is the master photographer and he is out-of-town this week. Although he doubts my computer abilities I will prove him wrong some day and post all our pictures using the complicated software he recently upgraded!!

I am still amazed at the politics here. We get the Sunday paper and the opinion page is just a riot, it is better than any comic strip. As one of the resident's so eloquently put it...."Welcome to planet Utah." And as our landlord told us, "it is good to get out of here whenever you can. The skiing and mountain biking is great but when you start to think life here is 'normal' it is time for a vacation out of the valley." These are good words to live by. However, despite this advice I am truly enjoying it here. The people are nice, the Department is extremely friendly, and we have had no problems whatsoever. Our neighborhood is safe and unlike midtown Omaha, there is no one going through out garbage looking for unshredded bank statements or food. We are in the Burbs, and as non-LDS renters there is no pressure to be on a first-name basis with the entire block, which in its own private way is nice. That's not to say we are not friendly with our neighbors, but we are certainly not overly involved.

I am actually getting bored with all my free time. Did I actually say that??? I am sure in a month or two I will look back at this blog in a fatigued delirium and think to myself that I would give anything to be bored!!! I guess that is how life goes, feast or famine. Well that is about all for this evening...back to Thank-You note writing...take care!!!

New pics are up!

FINALLY!

Pictures are up from Jenny's marathon, graduation week, and our reception. I'll try and get a picture of our "roommate" this week... So far he seems like a nice enough guy. It's late. I'm going to bed.

UTAH

Well we arrived in Utah without any troubles....unfortunately our furniture
did not fare so well. We had torn fabric on our couch and overstuffed
chair, and a chunk of wood out of one of our coffee tables. We also had
red marks on our love-seat. ALl in all I am glad we took out insurance on
our stuff but Allied Van lines makes the final call on whether it is
repaired or replaced. Word on the street is that they do not replace
much....big suprise!!! Anyhow, we are settling in and it looks like we are
going to like it here. Lots of outdoorsy stuff to do, trail running, bike
riding, skiing, etc. And now to the big question, we have not been
approadched to join the Mormon church and in fact no one has even asked us
if we are Mormon. We have joined a gym and have a resident's party to go
to this weekend which is good. We also joined "Partners in Medicine" which
is a group that sponsors activities for residents and spouses, yet another
way to make some new friends. Although we are looking forward to meeting
some new couples we are also enjoying our time alone together. Things are
much less hectic now and we love it!!! We also love having a washer and
dryer, a grill, and patio furniture...(oh the joys of living in a house).
We have also found every state liquor store near our house and their hours
of operation. There is nothing but 3.2 beer sold in the grocery stores so
we have to kind of plan ahead. We are headed to Denver next weekend to
visit Nicole. Hopefully by then we will find the chord for our digital
camera so we can put some pictures up from the reception, our move, and our
weekend in Colorado. They will be on our website...oocities.com/dj_rowan.

The Move

Well it seems that everything is starting to slow down. Jenny's no longer in pain from the marathon, she graduated, and we had our wedding reception last weekend. Good times had by all -- especially the One Man Rave!

We loaded all of our stuff into a 26 foot truck this morning. We decided to use a moving company versus loading ourselves -- I'm a wus. We filled up the entire truck. I couldn't believe my eyes. I had no idea we had so much crap!! I hope it all gets there... We leave tomorrow, May 22nd, and head for Gothenburg for an overnight visit at the cabin. Then we're off to Salt Lake City.

I'll put up some pictures from Jenny's senior week, graduation and some reception photos when we get broadband connectivity in SLC. See ya then...

pain blog

Hello all, in spite of my recent injury and anatomy blogs I decided to just
"wing it" and run the full 26.2 miles yesterday at the Lincoln Marathon.
Like they say "When in Rome..." I could not resist the temptation to pull
off at mile 12 and complete a solid half, no, no, no, instead I decided to
go ahead and do the full thing because I felt "O.K." With the rain coming
down, (sometimes pouring always drizzling), I was determined not to let
this Lincoln course get the best of me. I will say my tour of Lincoln took
me on some of my favorite bike paths and down my favorite street, Sheridan
Blvd. There is a new tournabout circle at 33rd and Sheridan that is both
aesthetically pleasing as well as much safer I imagine, (I used to dread
turning left from Sheridan onto 33rd, no one ever knew for sure who had the
right of way). All in all the rain was actually a good thing, it was cool
and there was no sun beating down. The combination of four hours of wet
squishy feet, miles of pounding, and gobs of Vaseline, have completely
exfoliated the skin on my feet, no need for a pumice stone here!!!
I must say one thing, although my time was not that great 3:58:00, I did
not plan on doing the full marathon, I did not really follow any training
program, I did not taper adequately in the weeks prior to the race, and did
not purposely carb load.....I probably carb load all the time without even
realizing it!! All of these things were probably not smart, but I do think
just doing it, (I sound like a Nike ad) helped me relax and took some of
the anxiety about a daunting task out of the equation. I think I was less
nervous and just ready for whatever my body would allow me to do and that
was the key. I would've stopped if I really hurt. I never hit a "wall" at
least I don't think I did. Orange slices and sports drink did help a great
deal. After each water station I really did feel more energized.
Amazingly, I felt worse after the 1/2 marathon last year than I did
yesterday!!!
That being said, I am in a world of pain today....yes sports fans, I cannot
walk down stairs. Kelly Bare gave me a good tip: walk downstairs
backwards. Kelly ran the San Diego Marathon last year in great time (way to
go Kel!), and had similar quad pain. Thanks for the advice, any similar
marathon war stories/remedies are appreciated!! I think there is a certain
point in the run when you no longer feel the pain, which is good at the
time but bad later.

I went to Peak Performance and talked to a running specialist who told me
it was perfectly normal to feel pain like I am experiencing. I sure hope
this is gone soon, I walk like an old woman!!! I had a massage today and
that seemed to help as well. Right now, ice and Ibuprofen are my friends,
later it may be vicodan and Vodka, (just a joke).
Talk to you all soon. Have a great week.
