Conman in Hatyai Asking For Donation To Rebuild Wat

This was posted in Sam's forum, warning about this person who tries to con him and his friends into a donation that he find suspicious in Hatyai.

Age: Look like late 30's to early 40's
Nationality: Malaysian Chinese
Height: about 1.7m
Size: Plump
Description: No spec. Square top hairstyle. Always wear short sleeves shirt and jeans.

Prey along Sanehanusorn road, between Grand Plaza hotel and Indra hotel.

This incident happened to me early last year. I brought a friend to Hatyai, it was his first time there.

That day I went into a 7-11 next to Grand Plaza hotel to buy something, and my friend having a smoke while waiting outside. This conman start a conversation with him. I came out and thought he was my friend's friend so I let my guard down slightly. We had already book our gal so reject his offer to show us his gals. I wanted to move on but he convinced my friend to bring us see a powerful monk.

We paid 300baht for a taxi to bring us there and back. After about 20min journey, we reach an unknown Wat. Not more than 5 persons in the premise beside us. Saw only an old monk staying in the basement of the Wat. Gave both of us some fortune telling and then wanted us to give money to rebuild the Wat in exchange for 4 lucky number. I told him that we didn't bring much cash so need to go back hotel take because I feel fishy about it.

On the way back, Heng kept promoting how good and powerful this monk. My suspicion become huge. Told him to wait outside the hotel as we go back room to take money to let him pass to the monk. But he wanted to follow us, so no choice we ran into Central and then make another different exit quick in order to get lost him. Secretly we sneaked back to our room after a long detour. Call our gal come to begin our first mission.

That evening going out for dinner, saw him again around the same area. This time round he dare not approach 4 of us. My gal told me that he was known as a trouble maker in Hatyai. Next day we quickly change hotel.

Minivan touts outside travel agencies

Beware of touts outside the travel agency offices. They will misled you that they are from the travel agency office, and will offer you a free ride to your hotel in their minivan or any other vehicle. There is no such free service provided by the travel agencies. These touts are not employees of the travel agencies, and their purpose is to bring you to places where they can get commission from the establishments. So please do avoid them, and just flag a tuk-tuk or motorcycle taxi to bring you to your hotel. This was posted in ISG forum, recounting the experience he had with this minivan tout outside a travel agency office when he arrived in Hatyai.

The case is like this, I take srimaju to HTY, who knows srimaju and davis tour are business partner or don’t know what relationship, the bus stop in front of the tour agency and ask the passenger to buy voucher (hotel etc.) from them.

Me and my friends all 3 newbie book 3 room, so the van driver told us he will send us to hotel since we book rooms with them, very polite welcome us to his van. When reach hotel, the driver said he will bring us to visit farm and bla bla bla, we rejected directly but he still waiting in the lobby refuse to go back, talking nonsense ask us to try and give a chance… after about 10minutes argue in the lobby, he became hot temper, want to wack my friend, then i ask how much only he will settle, he said 500bath to settle this case, WTF, i rather give as tips to my booking gal later. I pay him 100bath for the 3 minutes van ride and told him my friend uncle ** is coming to fetch us, only then he left with anger.

So the moral of the story is ‘free things not good, good thing not free’. This all happen within 30 minutes after came down from bus untill settle this case, after this is our first voyage in HTY. Will be share later
