Canine Diabetes, Cataracts and Blindness

KOKO July 14, 2001

I found out on, June 28th, 2001, that my 4yr 8mths old female Rottie has diabetes, cataracts and is going blind very quickly. Koko is my first Rottie. I never wanted any before because I had heard all the horror stories about how mean they are. Koko changed my mind real fast. She is the most lovable, sweet dog.

I was diagnosed with Small Cell Lung Cancer 3/06/1999 and again with a metastasis on 7/27/2000. Because of the cancer, which is terminal, I receive SSD/SSI. I get $537 per month which is my total income. The initial treatment costs for Koko has used all of that, which included her starter insulin, keto-daistix, syringes and food. When this is gone I don't know how I will be able to refill it without help. Many people have told me that I am nuts for putting out the expense for her care since I can barely feed myself. Those are the same people that weren?t here for me when I needed companionship, a shoulder to cry on. Koko stayed right by my side all through my chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Whether I was hugging the toilet or crying or just needing someone to talk to she was there for me, when no human was. I could cuddle her anytime since she, as well as my other dogs sleep with me.

It is quite a site, two large Rotties, a terrier and me all in a double bed. SMILE. I don?t know who snores the loudest. Her son Wizzer will be four Christmas Eve and Reno my little terrier/spaniel mix is almost seven.

They are becoming her 'guide dogs! They are having a hard time not being able to share their food with her but I really think they know something is wrong. Especially her eyesight, when they go outside, Reno stays right by her.

I love my dogs so much. I don?t know what I would without them. I can not and will not abandon Koko. All she ever asks for is to be loved and give love. I hope with your help I will be able to have her in my life for many more years.
