Sometimes on the dancefloor you see him pause in the middle of a cobra-like move to a crazed electro track, as he whips out his faithful mojo of an art shaman – his sketchbook, and his dance then resumes with a biro tracing some unique party moment, a person, or a vibe. His squiggly line reports not so much the costumes and faces, but rather it conveys the downright essence of the moment, the subtle fibres of mood, the grotesque and the beautiful, drunken sex and drugged-up stardom, charisma and insecurities; atmosphere dissected and portrayed bluntly in a few bold lines. A page of life drawing in impossible conditions then undergoes a passionate treatment with paints, inks and varnishes, vibrant colours and splatters. Such is the contents of Atomic’s sketchbook. “I found that reality is much more exciting than fiction, and moved on from comix to life drawing”. He could never resist constantly drawing scenes from his life, some ordinary and some utterly incredible. As well as tranquil images of everyday life in Japan, Jason Atomic’s sketchbooks are packed with sizzling hot reportage of outrageous underground freak scenes, from celebs to dragqueens, from fetishistic to shamanistic practices. You obviously must be “one of them” to be able to observe action in VIP or freak-only joints. Dressing up and performing is no chore to Jason Atomic, his look never goes unnoticed. His macho drag costume is a hand-made exquisite corpse of Elegant Gothic Lolita, punk rock, and …, topped up with his own mystical fetish regalia, “fetish in witch doctor sense”. This witch is prone to raising hell performing with Fist Fuck Deluxe as a demon-possessed popstar, the shows that have been described as an “instant psychedelic trip, no tab required.”
