    There was a bit of construction occurring along the footpath to the Base Camp. However, since there is such a strong dependence on trekkers for revenue, any political disruptions directly affects these people's livelihood.
     In November of 2001, an anti-government group called the Maoists, forced this route to close. They waged guerilla war against the government's troups and were abducting children from these mountains to fight with them.
     Hence, these people were sending their children (especially the boys) to live with relatives in Kathmandu.
