This is one of my favourite pictures. It was getting dark rather quickly when I came upon this tiny village in southern Mauritania. I befriended the boy in the red shirt who was the only one who spoke French. His family permitted me to stay in their home (where the bike is.)
Then, all his family (I do mean all of them) held a party in my honour. After a full day of cycling, I struggled to keep my eyes open. Around midnight, the boy asked me if I was tired. I said a little (not wishing to offend my hosts.) They all got up and bid me good-night.In the morning, I gave all the children a Canadian lapel pin.
If you look closely at the red shirt, it reads "I shot JR"...it comes from the TV show 'Dallas'. I thought it was so funny that so many years later, I found the person who shot him.
