26th June 2002 From:
Brink Road Shelter It was going to be a real hot day, as it was hot hiking that early in the morning. My shin started aching straight away and 'Peregrino' and 'Phoenix' soon passed me. I ended up limping all the way to Culver's Gap, where I met the others outside of Worthington's Bakery. I had decided I couldn't walk any further and would go back to DWG (Delaware Water Gap) to the church hostel and rest my leg for a few days. After some iced buns for breakfast, I went on to the road to start what could be a tricky hitch, as I had to take three different roads. Luckily, I got the first ride in five minutes from James Klausmann who owns an inn (B&B) up in Milford. He dropped me at Highway 209, which entered DWG Park. I started to hitch - then a Ranger spotted me and told me hitching was banned in the park. However, he kindly offered to drive me 15 miles to the edge of his jurisdiction. He called another Ranger and arranged to meet him at a picnic area. When we got there, he asked the other Ranger if he would drive me to DWG, which he agreed to. I was very fortunate as it was about a 40-mile ride in all and only took me an hour. I checked back in to the church hostel and Pastor Karen kindly gave me an ice pack. A whole new batch of hikers is here, so I now get to meet the people who have been trailing me for two months. I just hope that after 3-4 days rest this problem clears up as I can see myself getting depressed if it doesn't. Goodnight all from an injured hiker.
