Miles today: 23.8 miles

Got an early start today and battled the rocks until I reached Port Clinton at 10:00 A.M. The descent down the mountain into Port Clinton was one of the steepest and longest I have experienced. I was really feeling sorry for southbounders who have to climb this. I was hoping the northbound climb out of town facing me later on today would not be as steep.

As I crossed the bridge over the river I spotted the post office, so I stopped by to post my journal to my scribe, Relic. Sitting on the pavement outside with his drop box in his lap was 'Garrity'. He had the contents of the box spread around him and he was fast asleep. When I woke him he muttered something about a late night the night before. I then ducked around the corner to the outfitters to get information about possible food options. Vernon is the owner and he is really helpful. He stocked ice cream, sodas, and other hiker food. 'Réal' and 'Charlie Fox Trot' were already there, buying up big. I bought a few small food items, a Mountain Dew, and two half pints of ice cream. One was a Hershey's Vanilla with Marshmallow and Chocolate Sauce - it was delicious. The other was a Vanilla with Peanut Butter and Pecans. It was okay, but nothing to rave about.

Port Clinton is more of a small village than a town. Vernon said the population was about 600. There was a shop on the main street called The Peanut Shop, and as you would expect sold all manner of food items that are peanut related. There was also a hotel that served meals from 11:00 A.M, so I went there with 'Réal' and 'Garrity'. I had a salad, garlic bread with cheese, and a small fries. Let me tell you that this is a hiker-sized serving of fries. It was a dinner plate filled to the edges and heaped about 4" high. I finished lunch around noon then consulted my AT handbook and realized I needed to hike another 15 miles today if I was to meet my target of getting to the Palmerton Post Office before noon on Saturday.

The afternoon's hike was fairly tough for me, as my right shin was getting sore; it looked like I might be getting shin splints. I have been taking Ibuprofen to help manage any inflammation but this rocky terrain isn't helping.

I finally reached the shelter, which is really a cabin behind the BMECC (What's that?) Caretaker's house. It's great. There is a fridge loaded with sodas, juices, and ice creams; a solar shower too!

Here in the shelter with me are: 'Moondance', 'Charlie Fox Trot', '747', 'Flea', and 'Sidewinder'.

That's all for now, goodnight all.
