24th August 2002 From:
Bald Mt Brook Lean-to There must have been a fire on the summit sometime in the last few days as it was all burnt out and had that wet, fresh burnt smell. The firefighters had left a lot of hand water pumps and hundreds of feet of hose. I assume they'll come back by chopper in a few days and pick it up. I'm camped at Lake Hebron and am about four miles from Highway ME 15. I'll get to the highway about 9:00 A.M. tomorrow and hitch the four miles to Monson. Monson is the last town before entering the 100-mile wilderness that will take me to Katahdin. My intention is to rest up at one of the hostels in town for a few days before heading off on the last leg of my adventure. That's it for today. Goodnight all.
