Summary
Esther Grassian of the UCLA College Library put together a guide for using the World Wide Web. This guide has four categories to help the reader distinguish valid and invalid Internet web sites: Content & Evaluation, Source & Data, Structure, and other. The first category, Content and Evaluation are to aid the reader to inference the valid and non-valid documents. Here are a few keys to help you with your search. The web page must have good propose, and contain quality information. Make sure the document has good reference, and links. Click the links and see if they pertain to the information presented in the document, and whether they pertain to what you are looking for. The second category, Source & Data, is to inform the reader on when, where and by whom the document was written. Check and see if the information is up to date, and make sure all the sources and links are official. A high quality site would display the author or producer, whether it is an individual or a group presenting the site, and what are their qualifications. The third category, Structure, gives the reader a basis on how the document should be presented. A good quality web page should have graphics and art pertaining to the information on-hand. The text on the web page should follow basic rules of grammar, spelling and literary composition. Creativity is a plus, but shouldn't detract from the document itself. The last category, other, talks about fees, and hidden cost, which the reader may be responsible to pay if they retain the information. Security falls under the category Other: it helps the reader make sure that if they do choose to use this site and pay, they will be protected against fraud and the work kept confidential and secure.
