3@40 for the Cat--The Lioness Goes Golden
by Cyrene

Finally!

I was really tired last night, and decided on a quick PW hunt and then to bed early (the better to stay up late tonight). Hit town, geared up, and headed for the caves entrance. Then the crack of Hell caught my eye. Hmmmm. Been a long time since I tried it. Maybe a quick peek on 13. . .

13: Stairs next to stairs. Hmmm. Down we go.

14: A couple of sonar plinks produced a hiss and eventually a snake. A few pops and down she went. Hmmm. Vipers have been my problem children on previous (short) H/H excursions; now I have stun on them 8-). Better yet, they respond slowly to chars and have no ranged attack. Time for the stair hop. Left hand over pot keys, right hand on mouse, hop, hop, pot, hop, (boy did that room look nasty)hop, pot, hop, stairs, down. (when blind hopping with a Feline, don’t even look where you land, cast as quickly as you can back to back and find the stairs by using your automap to see where you have been)

15: Cast an escape portal, ms up, and off to carefully explore. Long corridor heading north. First monster: red witch. No worries. Can CL if I find a pack. Second monter type: Blue witch. Heh. Fireball bait. Third monster: soulies. Archery practice. An all witch level. HahA! This dot is all over but the killing. Wiped out the entire level just for the fun of an all-witch level. SC’d Laz and kicked him to death to show my disdain. He was not worth wasting one of my arrows on—sending forth his ladies to assault me while he cowered in his room. Men! Hit clvl 40 somewhere on this dlvl.

16: Open layout. Good. Sneak down the the little room joining the top and bottoms of the level, and set up camp. I send mr golem out to beat up lawyers and look for worthy prey. His death sounds alert me to the presence of the expected adversary: cannus spamus. One can is locked and dead, two cans is no problem as long as you follow the formula--two arrows for the near one then one for the far one to disrupt his animation, repeat. Any more than two requires SC of all in excess of two, lest things get nasty. Everything is going well until, working a group of three cans, I misfire a SC and lose the necessary sequence (how you miss with a self-targeting spell I don’t know, but I did). Down comes the 7 foot sword on my head and I soon wake up in Town with a bad headache. Dear Pepin gave me a nice yellow draught to clear my head, and advised I quit messing around with the little guys and dispatch the big kahuna. His point was well taken. After claiming my revenge on the three cans that had done me in, I used my mental powers to bend a spoon, umm, I mean open Diablo’s lair, and, using HB, invited him out for a debate. Senior Diablo maintained that a powerful Apocalypse spell that takes a long time to get off was a fearsome weapon, while I argued that a series of puny arrows that could be shot very quickly were superior. It did not take Senior D very long to get my point(s), and the third dot was mine.

The tale of my lives:

Death 1: First dot run, on Norm/H 16 (diablo)

Death 2: Two-dot run, Nightmare/H 16 (diablo, again, grrrr)

Death 3: First attempt at 3 dot run, H/H 13 (vipers, didn’t go back to H/H for months)

Death 4: Hunting PW in H/Caves, bad blind hop with wrong spells hot-keyed (whole mob of lightning bugs, iirc)

Death 5: Second attempt 3-dot run, H/H 16 (3 Blood Knights)

Rebirth 1: Completed Feline Retribution Quest with Simba on Hell difficulty. By slaying Diablo in Hell difficulty, I have now finalized the process and restored one of my lost lives.
