Paycheck
Dir. John Woo
I really like John Woo movies.  I really like Ben Affleck movies.  I really like sci-fi movies.  I really like action movies.  Paycheck is all of these.  It wasokay.  It didnt jell right, didnt take, it was like getting a hamburger when youve got your mouth all set for steak.  Its still good, but its just not what you were thinking of.  I dont think I had my expectations set too high for this one, it just kind of fizzled.  Ah well, you cant hit a home run every single time.

Paycheck is about a man who makes his living by reverse-engineering products.  In his words he rips off other peoples ideas for competitors.  He is hired to take a product apart and figure out how it works.  Sometimes he figures out a way to improve upon it at the same time.  Then the company who hires him has his memory wiped so there is no proof of shady dealings.  He is extremely well compensated for his time, but a friend of his makes him an offer that is even better than any other hes ever received.  A multi-million dollar paycheck:  all he has to do is agree to have 3 years worth of memory deleted at the end of it.  When the job is done he finds he has done some truly odd things in the time frame he can no longer remember.  He has forfeited over 92 million dollars.  He has mailed himself a number of random everyday objects of no value, which turn out to be the exact things needed to save him in a variety of intense situations.  Hmm, the plot thickens.

The show has a lot of good stuff to it.  Its futuristic, but only slightly, so its still familiar.  Its got some good action; its got some good acting.  I really like the girlfriend, who is not at all a waste-of-space female.  Its just not way up there on my list.  Its a good flick for a light night of sci-fi.

I rate it: Rental

Ben Affleck as Michael Jennings

Aaron Eckhart as James Rethrick

Uma Thurman as Rachel Porter

Paul Giamatti as Shorty
