Beyond Borders
Dir. Martin Campbell
Ladies and gentlemen, we have hit guilt trip. Actually thats not a fair way to start, because I really love the movie. The story is very powerful, brings attention to important issues, and there even is a neat love story (although this takes the back seat.) It is, however, incredibly and unashamedly manipulative.  The lesson is impressive the same way a sledgehammer is impressive: unstoppable and not interested in subtlety.

Beyond Borders is about two people who are part of a 3rd world relief program. They are there fighting the good fight for people who live in a fairly deep circle of hell. Looking at some of these people, many of whom look like corpses who have forgotten to stop breathing, you wonder how they keep going. You wonder why they keep going. I dont think I would make it. No food, no medicine, and all the diseases known to man. Early in the movie you see a buzzard standing next to a child, waiting patiently, knowing it wont be too long before the bird can eat. Its an incredibly powerful scene, and thats just in the beginning. You see the corruption of the various people in positions of power. Governments, militaries, rebels, you name it, men with guns are taking from the people who need it most.  The relief workers are the only ones that are on the side of the weak, trying to help. In the movie the humanitarians make deals with any devils they can find, because its the only way they can get the supplies through. After seeing a woman have surgery with no anesthetic because she cant feel anything past her hunger, Im okay with making deals. Its sledgehammer time.

Go see the movie. Feel grateful you live in the most prosperous country on earth, where starving to death or tripping over a landmine is news. Feel guilty because you know youre not doing all you can for people who need you (bleeding heart liberal talk here, please forgive my occasional spasms.) Its a great story with actors who are beautiful to look at, trying to get a message across through a completely shallow medium. Gotta love the irony. By the way, if you go, bring Kleenex.

I rate it: Full Price

Angelina Jolie as Sarah Jordan
Clive Owen as Nick Callahan
