Nobody can outdo the maestro. This release from 1984 is a single continuum piece which will probably stand for a long time as a quintessential piece du ambience. So multilayered that it appears to have near infinite depth.

While perhaps not as intricate as other recordings on this list, this one does produce a pleasant, gentle swirling perfect for lazing around or healing.

Al Gromer Khan - "Almond Blossom Day"
Developing a soundscape with many similarities to "Thursday Afternoon," this work comes from a Sufi perspective, developing a wondrous meditative atmosphere replete with burning candles and incense.
Steve Reich - "Music For 18 Musicians"
A long continuum recording of acoustic instruments and voices. It features a pulse based on human breath and a multitude of instruments weaving in and out of a sonic meshwork. Hypnotic and intimate simultaneously. Good for long conversations with friends at evening.
Terry Riley - "Shri Camel"
A number of recordings created live in the studio which evoke an exotic celestial abode filled with the mysteries of the universe. Distinctly influenced by the music of India, features some very tricky keyboard fingering with lots of echo which results in a building and shifting cystalline environment.
