Beaumaris castle is located on the Isle of Anglesy on the northwestern coast of Wales. It is without a doubt one of the best conceived and built castles of its time. The castle was comprised of a moat and two concentric walls that ringed an inner ward. The outer wall was lower than the inner wall so that the castle could be defended from either rampart. The gates for each wall were also staggered so that attackers would not have a direct path to the inner ward. The castle is no longer inhabited and has deteriorated somewhat over the years, but it is still intact and available for exploration. This castle is one of my all-time favorites for many reasons: scenic location, elaboarate castle architecture, intact ruins, and easy access. |
