CHIBUKU SHAKE SHAKE @ THE MASQUE, LIVERPOOL, WITH JUNIOR SANCHEZ 19/4/03

My short trip from Sheffield to Liverpool had been made to bear witness to a man that I’ve only ever heard great things about. Junior Sanchez is constantly hyped as one of the best DJs in the house music scene, and so my expectations were already sky high. A sense of excitement ran through my body as we made our way to the club.

The queue was short, the bouncers frisky but friendly, and we were in. The cosy venue used to be a theatre and the aisles made for perfect podiums with everyone being able to see the DJ and have their own little bit of space. A quiet, uneventful start progressed as the night went on. Slowly but surely, The Masque reached its capacity and everyone seemed at least interested by the time Dimitri from Paris came on. He was a little lacklustre at times, but paved the way for what was to come. The atmosphere was warm, the people were smiling and the air was filled with anticipation.

The man himself stepped up and took the night by the scruff of the neck. The dance-floor was absolutely ripped to shreds as the beats got a little darker and the mood began to swing. The reception was manic and Junior’s immense skill was on show as he faultlessly romped his way through an awesome set. The Audio Bully’s We Don’t Care absolutely took the roof off the place, but it was Snap’s Rhythm is a Dancer that shook the crowd into a hysterical mass of hands in the air. The set came to an end and the lights went up, with all feeling satisfied. The obligatory ‘one more’ chants began and then Junior dropped a monumental anthem to wrap the night off. Smells Like Booty Spirit, the Nirvana Vs. Destiny’s Child bootleg destroyed the floor and was a fitting end to a quality night.

Chibuku Shake Shake is highly recommended and well worth a visit. The crowd is tops and the music is perfect for a fun filled night.
