A DOG'S PRAYER
Discovered in the ancient minute book by Les Simon

O Lord of humans, make my master faithful to his fellowmen as I am to him.
Grant that he may be devoted to his friends and family as I am to him.
May he be open-faced and undeceptive as I am;
may he be true to the trust reposed in him as I am to his.
Give him a face cheerful like unto my wagging tail;
give him a spirit of gratitude like unto my licking tongue.
Fill him with patience like unto mine that awaits his footsteps uncomplainingly for hours.
Fill him with my watchfulness, my courage, and my readiness to sacrifice comfort or life.
Keep him always young in heart and crowded with the spirit of play even as I.
Make him as good a man as I am a dog; make him, worthy of me, his Dog.

DOG'S TEN COMMANDMENTS

  1. My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any separation from you will be painful for me. Remember that before you buy me.
  2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
  3. Place your trust in me-it's crucial to my well-being.
  4. Don't be angry at me for long, and don't lock me up as punishment.
  5. You have your work, your entertainment and your friends. I have only you.
  6. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don't understand your words, I understand your voice when it's speaking to me.
  7. Be aware that however you treat me I'll never forget it.
  8. Remember before you hit me that I have teeth that could easily crush the bones of your hand but that I choose not to bite you.
  9. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate, or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, or I've been out in the sun too long, or my heart is getting old and weak.
  10. Take care of me when I get old; you too will grow old. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say, "I can't bear to watch it," or, "Let it happen in my absence." Everything is easier for me if you are there.
Remember.....I love you!

Author's Note

Many think of having dogs as pets but do not know what it means to have one. Many of us have dogs as our pets but have not realised the potential joy that they can bring us and vice versa.

I believe that it is every owner's responsibility to provide more than just food and water to the animal. We must remember that they too have other needs. As pet owners, we have the responsibility to answer these needs. To answer our questions and to aid us in better understanding their needs, I've put up links to web sites with detailed information. This can be used as a starting point or as a supplement to other sources of information. We hope that the knowledge received will provide a better life for all dogs and owners.
