The self titled debut album of Crowded House might not have rattled any windowpanes upon it’s release, but it should have. Neil Finn writes pop melodies with a pen sharp as a razor blade. The lyrics, and sometimes the arrangements too, may not be the most thrilling, but the melodies defines perfect pop and it seems like Finn has been taking private lessons from a certain McCartney for years. Especially “Mean To Me”, “Now We’re Getting Somewhere” and, the huge hit, “Don’t Dream It’s Over” makes it look like Finn not only read the book on beautiful and catchy pop melodies, but even wrote it himself.

Considering the album was released in the mid 80’s, the production is fairly merciful and isn’t too dated. Instead of new and exciting gimmicks, Crowded House is based and relies on solid pop songs. Something you’d wish more people would have dared doing at the time.

Sadly, the standard of the four opening songs can’t be matched and the album could come off as somewhat inconsistent towards the end, but still I can’t help it. It’s damn fine album and most probably essential for any fan of simple pop. The only thing I’m really missing is the 12-stringed Rickenbacker. Oh well, I’ll manage.
