| A healthy puppy is a happy puppy VACCINATIONS Your puppy should have had a least one vaccination when you take him home. You should also recieve a Vet card with all the dates for his future shots on it. It is advisable to keep up with his regular vaccinations so he doesn't pick up diseases. It is more cost effective to have him vaccinated than have him sick. WORMING As puppies can be infected with roundworm before birth, all puppies should be dosed from 2 weeks of age. This should be repeated every 2 weeks until at least 12 weeks of age, then MONTHLY until 6 months of age. Treatment for hookworm is recommended as above. Adults dogs should be wormed every 3 months. It is advisable to get your worming treatment from the Vet, as then you can be assured of an excellent product and CORRECT dosages. HEARTWORM Heartworm is different from intestinal worms and is often fatal. These worms live in the chambers of the heart and are transmitted by mosquito bites. The most common symptom is heart failure due to masses of worms interfering with the heart action. Prevention is by taking a daily heartworm tablet, (these prevent the heartworm) or a monthly tablet, (these kill the heartworm). Check with your Vet which method is suitable for you and your pet. This must be done for the whole of your dogs life to satisfactory protect your dog. EXTERNAL PARASITES FLEAS: The most common skin disease in dogs is largely attributed to the biting of fleas. Flea bite dermatitis means the dog has an allergy to the flea saliva and the skin gets very itchy. To prevent this, you must wash the dog regularly with an effective insecticide, or use an appropriate flea treatment, as well as trying to eliminate the fleas from the bedding and his environment. TICKS: Most ticks do your dog little harm even in quite large numbers. HOWEVER, one species (scrub tick) injects a toxin with its saliva that can paralyse animals, and if left, kill them. If you find a tick on your dog, contact your local Vet immediately for further advice. Some flea treatments also prevent ticks, check with your Vet. |
