Biography: Colin McCollin

Colin's surname was spelt in various ways but the name appears to settled into the current spelling by the time of his death. The earliest evidence we have for Colin McCollin are the entries in the Registers of Sheffield Cathedral where he married Martha Gillot in 1801:

Here, he signs himself Colin McColin, although he reverts to the current spelling in his will of 1825. In the Hull Battle and Yorkshire trade directories his name is spelt variously as Colin M'Callam (1803), Collin Maccollin (1917), Collin M'Collin (1822) and Colin McColvin (1823).

According to the IGI Gillot was not an uncommon name in the Sheffield area at the time of their marriage. This suggests that Colin courted Martha in Sheffield and this supposition, taken together with the fact that Colin was described in the marriage entry as being 'of this parish' suggests that he was living in Sheffield at that time. Sheffield was a centre of metal manufacture and given that his trade was later described as a nailmaker and whitesmith it is highly likely that he learnt his trade as an apprentice in Sheffield. Unfortunately, searches of the Sheffield Cutler's Index have failed to find him.

In the Hull Battle Trade Directory (1803) he was working in Baine's Court, Hull. By the 1817 edition of Battle he had moved to 5 Trippet Court and was still there in 1823. He described himself as "being weak in body but of perfect mind and memory" in his will dated 28/11/1825, clearly aware that he didn't have long left. He died 24/6/1826 and since his wife, Martha, had died before him his children appear to have been left in the care of his neighbours and executors, William Blyth and Christopher Godmond. Colin was buried in Hull Holy Trinity churchyard.
