1901 Census

In the short time the 1901 Census was up and running last week (as of 10/1/02) I was able to obtain the following information. A search using 'McCollin' generated 44 hits in total (although it took me some time to realise that the only way I could do this was by running male and female searches separately). A search with 'McCollins' made a further six hits (all of which are likely to be errors of transcription by the original Census numerator).

I have tried to indicate below how each of these hits fit in with the known family tree but until I can check the originals these remain informed guesses based on age, known family relationships, and in consistency in use of place names.

Did the 1901 Census provide any new information? Yes!

Being able to search the complete Census using the internet is a very powerful tool. For example, I would have had some difficulty finding Charles and Alice McCollin in Middlesbrough without any prior knowledge of their whereabouts. I also had some confusion about this Charles Collin, and the later Charles Collin who married in 1927. Clearly, the latter was the elder Charles Collin's son, born in Middlesbrough in 1902.
One of the problems with reconstructing family histories from BMD and Census returns thus far has been matching records. BMD does not provide maiden names of spouses until 1913, nor maiden names for births until 1911. The biggest mystery I have been able to solve with the 1901 Census are the relationships between Collin and Jane (Maleline 1.1.3) and their children: Percival (aged 8), Wilfred (aged 3), Arnold (aged 1) and Doris (aged 1). I am still waiting to confirm these but all their records have consistency in categories Where born, Administrative County and Civil Parish.
I am also able to match up all the other male Hull and London McCollins which confirms the efficacy of previous research.
Any surprises? The Lancashire McCollins. Further research will be needed to see if we're related.
Any mistakes? There have been concerns about the accuracy of transcriptions. The only error I could see was the following: according to the information I have from previous Census returns Frederick McCollin (1.1.5), aged 24, should be 28.
