After a disastrous start to the season at the Estádio do Restelo two weeks previous, it was up to new manager Mariano Barreto to set the record straight in Marítimo’s first home game against Superliga new-boys Penafiel. Substitute appearances of debutant Kroum Bibishkov and Joel Santos, earned the verde-rubros 2 of the 3 goals scored.
Sat 11 Sept 2004  -  16:00  -  Estádio dos Barreiros, Funchal

The interval saw the introduction of Bulgarian Under 21 international Kroum Bibishkov, making his first appearance for the verde-rubros. “Bibi” made an immediate impact in the team and was denied his first goal by the post of Nuno Santos’ goal, only 1 minute into his debut!!

The Bulgarian striker, did however make his mark 10 minutes later, doubling Marítimo’s lead. Chaínho started a Marítimo counterattack before threading the ball through the Penafiel defence to Manduca. The fast paced left winger ran towards Nuno Santos before passing the ball across the goal to Bibishkov, who directed the ball into the empty goal.

The match started off promisingly for Marítimo with the ever impressive summer signing Manduca shooting just wide of Nuno Santos’ goal with a left foot strike from 30 metres. A great passing movement 5 minutes later saw Tonel latch on to Léo Lima’s perfect pass, leaving the Penafiel defence flat-footed, however the central defender volleyed his powerful shot just wide of the top left corner of the goal.

After squandering numerous chances, Marítimo finally broke the deadlock thanks to a Mitchell

Last seasons top goalscorer Alan came close to adding to Marítimo’s goal tally, after some fantastic dribbling by Luís Filipe on the right wing his well placed cross found Alan unmarked inside the penalty box, but his powerful volley flew over the crossbar, missing the goal by mere centimetres.

The verde-rubros did score a third goal through substitute Joel Santos, eight minutes from the end. The midfielder scored the best goal of the game, firing a low strike into the bottom left corner from 20 metres. Penafiel goalkeeper Nuno Santos, who remained busy throughout the game thanks to the Marítimo attack, couldn’t stretch far enough to reach the shot.

Marítimo still had yet another chance to score, when Alan’s diving header beat the goalkeeper but was unfortunately denied by the same post that denied Bibishkov earlier in the game.

It was never a hard game for Marítimo against a very poor Penafiel, and although 3-0 is a good win, the verde-rubros could have possibly notched up 5 or 6 goals, thanks to an almost none-existent Penafiel defence. It will be a season-long struggle for the Northern team, but Marítimo’s attentions now turn to the big UEFA Cup game against Glasgow Rangers this Thursday.

Van der Gaag header. A superb Léo Lima cross from the left wing, found the head of the Dutch defender at the front post, nodding the ball past a flapping Nuno Santos. It took until the stroke of half time for the visitors to create a goal scoring opportunity, however Rolf fired Clayton’s pass over the bar from close range.
