Marítimo kicked off the new Superliga season with a disastrous 3-0 defeat at the hands of Belenenses, last Saturday. The Estádio do Restelo has not been the nicest of places for the verde-rubros in recent seasons and this game was no exception. Marítimo manager Manuel Cajuda played five new signings in the starting eleven.

Belenenses extended their one goal lead just moments before the interval, when Antchouet beat Marítimo’s offside trap and hit a first time shot, from Juninho Petrolina’s excellent pass, past goalkeeper Marcos and into the bottom corner of the goal.

Despite the introduction of Bino and new signing Zumbi at half time, Marítimo’s fortunes didn’t change much, and the verde-rubros were lucky not to concede another goal when Juninho Petrolina fired a shot wide at the back post, from José Pedro’s cross.

Marítimo got off to a good start, and had a good 20 minute spell at the beginning of the game, producing a fine display, that is until Belenenses took the lead. The young Cape Verdean defender Rolandro scored the first goal of the new season, with a header from José Pedro’s corner, after Marítimo’s defence left him unmarked at the back post.

Marítimo’s solid start to the match was soon a distant memory as the home side continued to attack Marcos’ goal. 10 minutes after Belenenses opened the scoring, they came close to doubling the lead, when Lourenço’s headed shot was cleared off the goal line by debutant defender Ferreira. The Marítimo defence was again at fault failing to clear José Pedro’s corner, and then allowing Marco Paulo to retrieve and cross the ball to the unmarked Lourenço.
The game was put beyond doubt in the 60th minute when Belenenses’ on-loan striker Lourenço fired home a penalty, given away when defender Mitchell Van der Gaag brought down Juninho Petrolina in the penalty box. Goalkeeper Marcos dived the right way but couldn't reach the striker’s well placed shot.
