Just over two weeks until Marítimo's biggest game of the season, and the club have been thrown into chaos, by President Carlos Perieira's decision to sack manager Manuel Cajuda. The club now face a race against time to appoint a successor to Cajuda in time for Marítimo's UEFA Cup clash with Scottish club Glasgow Rangers, on September 16.

Marítimo made a terrible start to the new season with a 3-0 away defeat to Belenenses last Saturday, however many reports are suggesting that a rift between both Cajuda and Pereira was behind the decision, rather than the 3-0 loss.

Cajuda, recognised as one of the top managers in Portugal, arrived at the club 13 months ago. In his first season, he fulfilled his set target of qualifying for the UEFA Cup, finishing in 6th place, and claimed 3 wins over rival club Nacional, in three derby matches.

Cajuda was in Scotland last Sunday to see Rangers' game with rivals Celtic in the Old Firm derby (Celtic won 1-0) and before his shock exit insisted that the verde-rubros had nothing to

fear. He told Scottish newspaper, the Daily Record:

"It was a derby - one of the games of the year in Scotland - and showed Rangers are very strong at defending. They created few scoring chances, as they didn't attack much, but they also had six new players in the team. "

"They are difficult opponents who confirmed their status despite not having created much danger in this game. It was useful for drawing conclusions and I remain hopeful we can get through to the next round. "

A number of replacement managers have been rumoured following Cajuda's exit. Former Marítimo manager Nelo Vingada is one of the favourites, as is former Beira-Mar manager António Sousa, remembered for winning the Taça de Portugal while being relegated in the same season with the Aveiro club.
