Traditionally Marítimo don’t fare to well against Sporting, especially when playing at the magnificent José de Alvalade stadium, but the verde-rubros go into this game with high motivation following the excellent 1-0 win over Glasgow Rangers last week.

Marítimo will be with out a number of players for this match, including Eusébio, Rodrigăo and Zeca, who picked up an injury in the UEFA Cup game. Manager Mariano Barreto has called in B team striker Ronaldo and summer signing Rui Marques, both have yet to play for this season.

Barreto will most likely revert back to the starting line-up who defeated Penafiel 3-0 in the second week of the Superliga. Bibishkov will return to the first eleven, in place of Luís Filipe, who is currently on loan from the Lions. However he is still available to play as there is no clause in the loan deal stating his ineligibility for this big game. After a superb start to the season, Manduca will return to his favoured left wing position, having played as a makeshift striker against Glasgow Rangers.

The Lions have not had the best of starts to the season. Having scraped a win at home to Gil Vicente in the first week (3-2), Sporting then lost away to surprise package Vitória Setúbal, recently promoted from the Liga de Honra. The Lions comfortably beat Rapid Vienna 2-0 in the UEFA Cup last week.

Miguel Gárcia, Paulo Sérgio and Hugo are all absent from the squad all due to injury, but one face familiar to Marítimo fans will be Danny. The star of Portugal’s Olympic team in Athens, started his career with the verde-rubros before being sold to the Lions, only to return on a 1˝ year loan spell. This season the attacking midfielder has established a place in the first team.

Marítimo’s Luís Filipe and Bino, as well as manager Mariano Barreto, will also renew old ties with the Lisboa club. Luís Filipe is currently on loan from Sporting, while Bino and Barreto spent a considerable number of years of their career at the club, whereas Bino played, Barreto was a coach.

A rare victory at the José de Alvalade stadium for Marítimo will complete an excellent week for the club and maintain Mariano Barreto’s 100% record at the club as manager.

Probable line-up:

Marcos, Ferreira, Mitchell, Tonel, Briguel, Chaínho, Węnio, Alan, Manduca, Léo Lima and Bibishkov.
