Marítimo's UEFA Cup challenge kicks off tonight against Glasgow Rangers of Scotland, at the Estádio dos Barreiros, starting at 20.00 pm. The stadium has hosted many memorable European matches, most recently the 1-0 win against Leeds United, and hopefully this will be another great night of football.

The ‘Caldeirăo dos Barreiros’ has been a fortress for Marítimo on European nights with Juventus the only team to come away with a win (1-0). Marítimo’s home record will prove favourable, if not decisive, in tonights game, as an out-of-form Rangers team visit in the first leg of the first round.

Following an administration error, new signings Pena, Rui Marques and Kroum Bibishkov, who scored on his debut at the weekend, are all ineligible and will be forced to watch from the stands. With only two natural strikers available (Zumbi and Souza), it is probable that left winger Manduca will take up the position of the lone striker, with Alan and Luís Filipe supporting from the wings.

Marítimo have no suspended players, but on-loan midfielder Silas is still out with an injury, so Léo Lima, man of the match in Saturday’s 3-0 win against Penafiel, will resume the position of attacking midfielder.

Old adversaries will be renewed tonight for Dutch defender Mitchell Van der Gaag and new manager Mariano Barreto. Van der Gaag played for Scottish club Motherwell in 1996, saving them from relegation with a spectacular goal. Rangers manager Alex McLeish was the manager of Motherwell when Mitchell was there, although he says "Maybe McLeish won't recognise me. I had a lot of hair back then but it's all gone now!" Rangers’ German goalkeeper Stefan Klos was coached by Mariano Barreto when they were both at Borussia Dortmund in Germany.

Rangers have almost a full squad, with only Alex Rae and defender Alan Hutton missing through injury and suspension. This will be a crucial game though for the players, following a poor start to the league campaign, and losing to CSKA Moscow in Champions League qualifying, manager Alex McLeish is under-fire from the Rangers fans. A defeat tonight could spell the end for McLeish.
