Dutch defender Mitchell Van der Gaag has played down Marítimo’s chances of beating Rangers tomorrow evening. In six UEFA Cup home ties only one team—Juventus—has arrived at the ‘Caldeirăo dos Barreiros’ on European duty and left with a win. But the former Motherwell defender believes Rangers will be red hot favourites when the sides meet in the first round of the UEFA Cup tomorrow night.

He said: “It is a huge game for us against a big club. Its going to be something different for us that’s for sure. We’re looking forward to the game.”

“I think it will be very difficult for us. Rangers will be the favourites and we know it will be two tough matches for us. But in football everything is possible. Hopefully we can do well but we know it will be difficult as Rangers are the stronger side on paper.”

“We will do our best as we have nothing to lose. We want to show the people that we are

capable of playing big games and doing something. We have a good record at home but this is only the fifth season we have been in Europe so you can’t read too much into that. The last time we played in Europe we played Leeds and beat them 1-0. Maybe they underestimated us a little bit but then we lost 3-0 in England.”

“When the draw was made this year I said it would be nice to play against Rangers but everyone else said hopefully not as they would be the favourites to beat us. The team and the board wanted to avoid Rangers and Villarreal, but for me it is good to come back to Scotland.”

“It’s a huge game for us and it’s better to play against a bigger team.”
