Mariano Barreto has been appointed as the new manager of Marítimo, the club have announced. Aged 47, Barreto has previously worked with Champions League regulars Bayer Leverkusen and Lokomotiv Moscow, as well as Portuguese clubs Sporting and Alverca. The Portuguese coach was recently the manager of the Ghana national team, participating in the 2004 Olympic Games. Despite going out in the first round, Barreto guided the team to a 2-2 draw against Italy, after being 2-0 down.

Portuguese colony Cape Verde Islands, in a qualifying match for the 2006 World Cup to be held in Germany. The manager resigned from the position, after complaining about the poor training facilities on offer to the African team. In an interview following his resignation, Barreto claimed that he did not intend to return to Portugal, instead opting to go to Russia and to former club Lokomotiv Moscow.

Barreto takes over as the manager of the verde-rubros from Manuel Cajuda who departed last week, after an arguement  with club President Carlos Pereira. The new manager faces his first challenge this coming Saturday when Superliga new-boys Penafiel visit the "caldeirăo" in Marítimo's first home game of the 2004/2005 season. The following Thursday will see the visit of Scottish club Glasgow Rangers in the first round of the UEFA Cup.

Speaking to UEFA.com Barreto said "I hope to fulfil the club's wishes and ambitions and please the board and supporters. It was the club's standing that made me leave Ghana to join Marítimo."

The new manager will arrive in Madeira tomorrow, to be officially unveiled to the fans and media. Barreto will take charge of his first training session at the Santo António Complex, scheduled for 17:30 pm.
