| Now in the twilight of his career, the veteran goalkeeper has had is highs and lows at the club. Although capable of high jumping and great reaction saves, Nélson is unusually small for a goalkeeper, which can sometimes be a weakness. Nélson started his career in the lower divisions of Portugal with Uniăo Tomar. Nélson gradually moved up the leagues, joining Ovarense in 1992 and then Segunda Liga club Rio Ave in 1995. Initially signed as a back up goalkeeper in 1997, to Yves Van der Straeten, Nélson found himself claiming the 'number one' spot when the Belgian goalkeeper returned to his homeland. Nélson remained as the first choice goalkeeper until January 2003, with the arrival of Marcos, from Brazil. |
