After already saving the club in the 1930’s, and purchasing a new training ground in the 1960’s, Marítimo’s Sócios were called upon to save the club again, and reach what would be uncharted territory for the verde-rubros. The club asked each member to pay as much as possible to help raise the money needed. And although everyone contributed it still wasn’t enough. A bank loan had to be used to reach the target of 800,000, and in the autumn of 1973, Marítimo were competing in the Segunda Liga for the first time in the clubs history.

At the end of season, Marítimo finished a very credible 5th place, and the following season, improved by finishing 4th. Marítimo had already established themselves as one of the top teams in the Segunda Liga, only two years after competing in regional competition, but the best was yet to come.

The 1976-1977 season was to be one of the most historic in the clubs history. Only four years after Marítimo joined the National League, the fans were celebrating the verde-rubros first ever promotion. A fantastic 4-1 win over Olhanense on the final day of the season, in front of a packed Estádio dos Barreiros, saw Marítimo win the Segunda Liga and promotion to the Primeira Liga. It was an incredible achievement for the team, and especially the fans who put so much into the club. The fans partied through the streets of Funchal, with one journalist describing the celebrations in Madeira like “an exploding volcano”.

Marítimo stayed in the Primeira Liga for four seasons (finishing 12th, 10th, 11th and then 15th) before being relegated in 1981, after a season full of player injuries. Marítimo bounced straight back but a 14th place finish in the 1983-1984 season meant that Marítimo were relegated back down to the Segunda Liga. Marítimo won promotion the following season and have maintained their place in the Portuguese top flight to the present day.

The 1989-1990 season saw all three of Madeira’s top teams competing in the Primeira Liga for the first time. Nacional and Uniăo joined Marítimo in Portugal’s elite division, a huge accomplishment for Madeiran football. Despite having more local derby matches than ever before in a league campaign, Marítimo only managed two draws with Nacional (2-2 and 0-0) and a 1-0 win and a 0-0 draw against Uniăo, with all three teams using the Estádio dos Barreiros for home games.

After a decade of mixed fortunes, the 1990’s was to be very different. The 1990’s was the most successful decade for CS Marítimo. After maintaining their place in the Primeira Liga, the next step was to achieve top half status, something Marítimo first did in 1988. From there on the only way was up, and the verde-rubros never looked back, finishing 10th in 1991, 7th in 1992 and 5th in 1993, the clubs highest league ranking to date, thanks to manager Paulo Autouri. The fifth place finish at the end of the 1992-1993 season meant that Marítimo were to embark on a new adventure, where no club from Madeira had ever been before, the UEFA Cup.
