Marítimo were the first Madeiran team to enter into the Portuguese National Championships, in June 1923, but fell at the first round losing 2-1 to Académica Coimbra. However only 4 years after entering the national competition, something very special happened.

1926 was a great year for Marítimo, and for Madeiran football. The season started off with a series of matches against two of Eastern Europe’s best teams, Hungarian club Szombathelyi AK losing 4-1, 2-1 and drawing 2-2, and German team SK Minerva of Berlin.

In April, José Ramos, nicknamed Zé Pequeno because of his small height, became the first Marítimo player and the first Madeiran to play for the Portuguese National Team, making his debut in a friendly match in Toulouse, against France. The following month, Marítimo were appearing in their fourth National Championship, however this was to be like no other.

On the 23 May, Marítimo destroyed Porto 7-1 in the famous semi-final at the Sporting’s Campo Grande in Lisboa. The emphatic win put Marítimo into the final, and as favourites against another powerhouse team, Belenenses, winners of 3 National Championship’s (1927, 1929, 1933).

The final, which took place at the Campo do Ameal in Oporto, was a heated affair, and had to be called off 20 minutes early after the dismissal of two Belenenses players, by referee José Guimarăes. Marítimo’s team for the game was: Angelo Fernandes, António Sousa, José Correira, Domingo Vasconcelos, José Ramos, José Sousa, Francisco Lápis, António Alves, Manuel Ramos, José Fernandes and António Teixeira Camarăo. José Ramos scored the first goal of the match in the 55th minute, and Manuel Ramos’s strike 5 minutes later ensured that the trophy would be going back to Madeira. The final score was 2-0, and Marítimo were crowned Portuguese champions for the first and only time. 6 June 1926 will forever be remembered as the greatest day in the clubs’ history.

Belenenses were to get their revenge the following season, knocking out Marítimo in the quarter-finals, with an 8-1 thrashing. A 3-0 win over Vitória Setúbal in the final was the first of three National Championship wins for the Lisboa club.
José Ramos
It wasn’t until the 1930-1931 season that Marítimo came close to emulating their success of 1926, however the verde-rubros were knocked out in the semi-finals by a Porto side inspired by great players such as Pinga, himself a former Marítimo star. Madeira-born Pinga made a name for himself in the years following the 1926 final, and was destined to become one of the great Portuguese players of that era. However it was at Porto where he enjoyed most of his success, after his controversial transfer to the northern club during the Christmas of 1930.

Pinga was one of many players who left the club during the 1930’s in an exodus forced on by mounting debts. The Campo do Almirante Reis was repossessed by the council, and the clubs’ trophies sold off to raise funds, however they were later reclaimed by the loyal fans of Marítimo, who assisted the club in its financial crisis. As Marítimo suffered, our rivals Nacional and Uniăo prospered, winning six of the 10 championships between them, during the 1930’s.
