Riane Eisler

The Chalice and the Blade - "Weaving together evidence from art, archaeology, religion, social science, history, and many other fields of inquiry into new patterns that more accurately fit the best available data,  The Chalice and the Blade tells a new story of our cultural origins. It shows that war and the "war of the sexes" are neither divinely nor biologically ordained. And it provides verification that a better future is possible - and is in fact firmly rooted in the haunting drama of what actually happened in our past "-- from the introduction
Sacred Pleasure: Sex, Myth, and the Politics of the Body- New Paths to Power and Love Our deepest and most powerful human yearning is for connection - for sex, for love, for all that gives pleasure and meaning to our lives. Yet sexual violence is commonplace and the "war of the sexes" continues to perpetuate misunderstanding and pain. Why does this struggle persist? What can we do to reclaim our innate power to give and receive pleasure and to find meaning in our lives?  Sacred Pleasure ignites a brand-new sexual revolution. Ina provocative tour de force on the sexual politics that fashion our time, this groundbreaking book cuts through much of the confusion and turmoil around us, tackling sexual myths that have corrupted male/female relationships over the millennia.

Clarissa Pinkola Estes, PhD

Women Who Run with the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype -Within every woman there lives a powerful force, filled with good instincts, passionate creativity, and ageless knowing. She is the Wild Woman, who represents the instinctual nature of women. But she is an endangered species. For though the gifts of wildish nature belong to us at birth, society's attempt to "civilize" us into rigid roles has muffled the deep, life-giving messages of our own souls. In Women Who Run with the Wolves, Dr. Estes unfolds rich intercultural myths, fairy tales, and stories, many from her own family in order to help women reconnect with the fierce, healthy, visionary attributes of this instinctual nature.

Mysteries of the Dark Moon: The Healing Power of the Dark Goddess - Exploring the mystery, wisdom, and power of the dark phase of the moon's cycle Mysteries of the Dark Moon presents a lunar-based model for moving through the dark times in our lives with understanding, consciousness, and faith in renewal.  The moon's dark phase has traditionally been associated with death and isolation. The mythical embodiment of these fears is the Dark Goddess. Known around the world by many names -- Lilith, Kali, Hecate, and Morgana -- the archetypal Dark Goddess represents death, sexuality, and the unconscious -- the little understood, often feared aspects of life.

Elinor Gadon

The Once and Future Goddess: A Symbol for Our Times - In this beautifully illustrated and far-reaching history, Elinor Gadon vividly weaves words and images to demonstrate the powerful connections between ancient and contemporary art, between the Goddess of the Ice Age and the Goddess of today.  This panoramic view of Goddess imagery extends from the prehistoric Goddess representations of Catal Huyuk, Malta, Avebury and Crete, to the more patriarchal images of the Sumerians, Greeks, and Christians, to the wide range of contemporary artists inspired by the Goddess, including Frida Kahlo, Mayumi Oda, and Judy Chicago.

Joseph Campbell, Maria Gimbutas

The Language of the Goddess -"Gimbutas has woven together comparative mythology, early historical sources, linguistics, ethnography, and folklore to prove her case: that the language of the goddess under girds our entire Western culture. This beautifully illustrated book will keep archaeology, religion, and classics departments the world over a tizzy"  Rita Mae Brown LA Times
The Gods and Goddesses of Old Europe, 6500-3500 B.C. : Myths, and Cult Images -European civilization between 6500 and 3500 B.C. - long before Greek or Judaeo-Christian civilizations flourished - was not a provincial reflection of neighboring Near Eastern cultures but a distinct culture of its own unique identity. The mythical imagery of this matrilineal era tells us much about early humanity's concepts of the cosmos, of human relations with nature, of the complementary roles of male and female. Through study of sculpture, vases, and other cult objects from southeastern Europe, Gimbutas sketches the village culture that evolved there before it was overwhelmed by the patriarchal Indo-Europeans. The Goddess incarnating the creative principle as Source and Giver of All, fertility images, mythical animals, and other artifacts are analyzed for their mythic and social significance in this beautifully illustrated study.

Sam Krammer, Diane Wolkstein

Inanna, Queen of Heaven and Earth; Her Stories and Hymns from Sumer - With the publication of this book, we have for the first time in any modern literary form one of the most vital of ancient myths - that of Inanna (known to the Semites as Ishtar), the world's first goddess of recorded history and the beloved deity of the ancient Sumerians. In this groundbreaking work ...  Kramer  ... and Wolkstein  ... have retranslated, ordered, and combined the fragmented cuneiform tablets comprising the Cycle of Inanna to create an authentic portrait of the goddess from her adolescence to her completed womanhood and 'godship'.

Barbara Mor and Monica Sjoo

The Great Cosmic Mother: Rediscovering the Religion of the Earth -This classic exploration of the Goddess through time and throughout the world draws on religious, cultural, and archaeological sources to recreate the Goddess religion that is humanity's heritage. Now, with a new introduction and full-color artwork, this passionate and important text shows even more clearly that the religion of the Goddess - which is tied to the cycles of women's bodies, the seasons, the phases of the moon, and the fertility of the earth -- was the original religion of all humanity.

Vicki Noble

Shakti Woman Feeling our Fire, Healing our World - "For women today who seek to regain their lost connection to nature, power and to their own bodies, Shakti Woman is both guide and inspiration. Asia Shepsut

Journey of the Priestess : The Priestess Traditions of the Ancient World : A Journey of Spiritual Awakening and Empowerment - In the ancient world, throughout the rise and fall of Sumer, Egypt, Babylonia and Persia, women held great power. Their influence gradually spread westwards until it finally took root in Greece and Rome. Through an examination of history, ancient stories and images, Asia Shepsut links age-old ritual to modern conditions. The worship of Inanna, Ishtar, Astarte, Isis, Athena and Aphrodite, with the yearly cycle of festivals and the celebration of the sacred marriage, still has striking relevance for the modern-day priestess striving to blend everyday life with spiritual service.

Starhawk

Dreaming the Dark: Magic, Sex, and Politics -Dreaming the Dark is the story of a journey, its author's movement from a place of despair to one of action. It is meant to start the reader on a similar path from the numbness and hopelessness often felt in the face of racist and sexist violence, poverty and unemployment, chemical spills, and the threat of nuclear annihilation to an internal sense of strength and knowledge. It is ultimately a message of hope and optimism, for Starhawk shares not only a vision but tools for personal empowerment, the bui8lding of community, and the transformation of culture.
The Spiral Dance: A Rebirth of the Ancient Religion of the Great Goddess - this is another one of those must have books.  I especially like the exercises and meditations that Starhawk gives. You will find this book to be a practical workbook for the Wiccan religion.    She covers everything from the Goddess religion and mythology to magical symbols, rituals, initiation, covens, sacred space and the Wheel of the Year.

Merlin Stone

When God Was a Woman - Here, archeologically documented, is the story of the religion of the Goddess.  Known by many names - Astarte, Isis, Ishtar, among others - she reigned supreme in the Near and Middle east. Beyond being worshipped for fertility, she was revered as the wise creator and the one source of universal order. Under her, women's roles differed markedly from those in patriarchal Judeo-Christian cultures. Women bought and sold property, traded in the marketplace, and the inheritance of title and property was passed from mother to daughter.

Barbara Walker

The Women's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets - "Walker has written a tribute to the goddess. Like the witches and wise women of old, Walker has eyes to see what the rest of us cannot: the figure of the goddess hidden behind the rites, dogma, fairy tales, nursery rhymes, superstitions, even our very language. She sees the restoring of the goddess to her rightful place as an essential healing act for women and our whole culture ... You can rely on it to be witty and compulsively readable" -- The Philadelphia Inquirer

Marta Weigle

Spiders and Spinsters: Women and Mythology - this text is a wide ranging source book of texts and graphics about women as they are depicted in the mythologies of the American and classical Judeo-Christian tradition. The study of sacred symbols, texts, and rites and their dynamic expression in human psyches and societies, has generally concerned men's myths: most extant documents, field data, and interpretation come from male scribes, scholars, artists, and informants. As a result, Weigle notes, we know a considerable amount about women who people men's narratives, but almost nothing about women's mythologies - the stories women recount among themselves, the rituals they perform, and their evaluation of their own and men's significant and moving symbolic expressions. It should not come as a surprise, then, if the major portion of this book shows how men have portrayed women mythologically.

The Goddess Changes: A Personal Guide to Working With the Goddess - The Goddess Changes is a guide for working with the Goddess in a personal, individual way. All of us go through the cycle of birth, life and death, and throughout our lives this cycle repeats itself in metaphorical ways. This process is reflected in the Goddess's sacred tasks of Spinning, Weaving and Cutting. By exploring the ancient feminine mysteries, and particularly the goddesses associated with the weaving of the thread of life, we can find a way of working with the changes that life brings.
