Thoughts from Elaine (Alexander) Haley - CR graduate 1975:
Just for fun I decided to visit this site and see what was happening at the old school and found that some things never change(like looking like you've been awake for 6 months!). I graduated in 1975. The lessons I learned at the knees of my instructors Jean Hazen and Ann Malone have stood the tests of time and carried me through a 25 year career. Back in the "old days" we were required to wear yellow dress uniforms, or (a major innovation) pants suits! We also were required to wear the most "unique" cap. Being enlightened women of the '70s we tried to get the hated cap DC'd, but to no avail. I see from your pictures you've since managed to do away with both uniform requirements and get down to the real issues in Nursing! I congatulate all of you for entering a profession in turmoil and hope that you can find within yourselves the resources for change in a challenging and ever-changing nursing environment. Some principles I learned have stayed the same in all my areas of practice over the years-the most important of which is that Nursing is always evolving and changing with the culture of the times. It is never stagnant, but always dynamic, exciting and challenging. You may not always be happy, but you will always find personal growth in the "real world". The experiences and comraderie you have now will carry you far into your professional future. Good luck to you all!
I went on to obtain my BSN from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville in 1984. All my credits transferred, which just shows you what a great program CR has!!! I have spent the bulk of my career as a charge nurse in ICU/CVR but just today I was called for a position as a Case Manager, which I've happily accepted. It's time for me to leave the
glory to the younger nurses and move on to something a little less physically taxing! I'm still living in the midwest, in the St. Louis area-GO CARDINALS!!
